Women's Basketball Wins Big On Senior Day

ALLENDALE, MICH. -  The GVSU women's basketball team began their home schedule this afternoon with a convincing 94-43 victory over Ohio Dominican. The Lakers are now 4-0 to begin the season.

Before the start of the game, Senior Day was held to commerate the careers of Rylie Bisballe, Abrie Cabana, Ellie Droste, Hadley Miller, and Kathryn Schmidt, along with student assistants Alia Burgess and Jordyn Roberts. This class has tallied a record of 111-15, winning three GLIAC regular season titles, two GLIAC Tournament titles, and made the NCAA tournament four times. In the tournament, they advanced to three Midwest Regional Championship Games, including a run to the 2022 Final Four.

Once the game got underway, it was all Lakers. They began on a 12-0 run , highlighted by a Schmidt triple. The Panthers didn't get on the board until 6:32 left in the quarter, but they eventually got their deficit back to single-digits at 15-6. The Lakers would respond with a 6-0 run to close out the quarter, with Avery Zeinstra beating the buzzer with a layup to put GVSU up 21-6.

After a bucket from ODU, Zeinstra buried back-to-back triples to give the Lakers a 19-point advantage. The Panthers got it within 15, but Droste and Miller both hit threes to bring the lead above 20 points for the first time. Those two threes ignited a 19-9 run to end the half, with GVSU heading back to the locker room up 46-21.

Ohio Dominican got their deficit down to 21, but GVSU responded with a 15-2 run to close out the quarter, extending their lead over 30 points to 70-36 after three quarters.

That run continued into the final quarter, as the Lakers began on a 11-0 run to push the lead to 81-36. To close out the run, Sydney Cherney and Maya White both hit three-pointers, Cherney's being the first points of her career. Lauren Slagle would get in on the three-point barrage, burying one of her own, then Cherney hit another from distance to close out the scoring and finish off win number four.

Rylie Bisballe was the leading scorer tonight, totaling 14 points on 7-8 shooting, adding four rebounds and three steals. Ellie Droste scored 13 points, making three three-pointers and Avery Zeinstra scored 10. Kathryn Schmidt added nine points and six boards, while Hadley Miller and Maya White each scored seven points.
