ALLENDALE, MICH. – The third-ranked GVSU women's basketball finished off their first home weekend with a second straight dominating win, this time taking down Walsh 85-41. The Lakers are now 5-0 to begin the season.
For the second day in a row, GVSU got out to a quick start, starting today with an 8-0 run.
Abrie Cabana hit two threes in the scoring run, part of her 11-point opening quarter. After the Cavaliers got on the board, the Lakers brought their lead to double-digits following a
Nicole Kamin steal and layup. With the Lakers up 16-6, they went on another big run, this time scoring 13 straight, with Cabana drilling another triple in the run, to go up 29-6. The Cavaliers would score the final five points of the quarter, trailing 29-11 after one.
An
Ellie Droste three brought the Laker lead back above 20 points early in the second quarter, and it would dip below for the rest of the game. GVSU led 38-17 with just over six minutes to play in the half, but over the next four minutes of play, they extended their lead up to 50-17, going on a 12-0 run. Walsh was able to end the run with a basket, but GVSU led by 31 at the break.
A 7-0 run to begin the third quarter, five of which were scored by
Kathryn Schmidt, pushed the Laker lead to 57-19. A three from
Hadley Miller with just over four minutes to play brought the lead to forty points at 65-25. The lead would stay above forty through the end of the quarter, leading 70-28 with one quarter to go.
The two teams traded baskets for majority of the final quarter, as GVSU outscored Walsh 15-13 over the final 10 minutes. The Lakers scored 10 points in the paint in the quarter, then closed it out with a three-pointer from
Maya White, capping off their fourth game this season with over 80 points.
Ellie Droste led all scorers with 12 points, while
Rylie Bisballe and
Abrie Cabana each had 11 points. Bisballe had a team-high eight rebounds, while her sister MacKenzie had seven.
Megan Crow was a perfect 5-5 from the floor to score 10 points, with
Maya White adding eight.
Molly Anderson recorded four assists and four steals, part of the Laker defense that forced 27 turnovers. GVSU outrebounded Walsh 53-29 and the Cavaliers shot just 26.8% from the floor.
The Lakers play one game next week, heading out on the road for a Friday clash with Thomas More.
