#3 Lakers Pick Up Second Ranked Win, Defeating #8 Union

BILLINGS, MONT. – The third-ranked GVSU women's basketball team picked up their second straight ranked win, knocking off number eight Union, 86-60. The win caps off a perfect 3-0 opening weekend, as they defeated Findlay and sixth-ranked MSUB the past two days.

For the first time all season, the Lakers trailed in a game following an early three from the Bulldogs. That deficit only lasted 19 seconds, as Abrie Cabana hit a three of her own to tie the game. Hadley Miller hit a three-pointer of her own shortly after to give the Lakers a lead, one they would never relinquish. The hot outside shooting continued the rest of the opening quarter, with Ellie Droste hitting two from deep, and Cabana and Miller each hitting another. The offensive explosion led to a 31-18 Laker lead.

After Union cut the Laker lead back down to eight early in the second quarter, another Droste triple started a 7-0 run to put GVSU up by 15 at 40-25. The Bulldogs responded with a 10-0 run, bringing their deficit to five with just over a minute to play in the half. MacKenzie Bisballe put an end to the run with a layup to make it 42-35 at the half.

The Laker lead quickly got back into double-figures, as Rylie Bisballe scored five early points to bring the lead up to 12. The lead continued to grow throughout the rest of the quarter, with Molly Anderson burying a triple and Droste hitting another just before the end of the frame to put GVSU up by 17 at 59-42.

Lexi Plitzuweit made a layup through contact, adding the free throw, to bring the lead above 20 early in the fourth quarter. A 9-0 Bulldog run got their deficit down to 13 with just over six minutes to play. Plitzuweit ended that run with a three, then Rylie Bisballe added an and-1 of her own to make it 74-55. From there, the Lakers hit six free throws and Maya White scored her first collegiate points and the Lakers won their third game in as many days.

Ellie Droste led all scorers with 18 points, hitting four threes. Rylie Bisballe had 16 points, four boards, and three steals. MacKenzie Bisballe scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds. Lexi Plitzuweit had a team-high seven rebounds to go along with six points. The Lakers won the rebounding battle 43-33 and forced 18 Bulldog turnovers.
