Stevens Point, Wisc.- The Grand Valley State Women's Wrestling team competed in the Pointer Open. There were 13 different Lakers that took part in the tournament.
Freshman Rayana Sahagun kicked off her day with an impressive performance, securing two tech falls with scores of 10-0 and 12-1. After advancing to the semifinals, she dominated her opponent once again, winning decisively with a score of 10-0 to earn her place in the finals. In a championship match, Sahagun ultimately claimed first place with a hard-fought 8-6 victory.
Hannah Palise had an impressive showing in the 131 weight class tournament. She began her day with an outstanding performance, pinning her first opponent in just 1:12. Continuing her momentum, Palise faced off against Hollender later in the day and achieved another victory, pinning her in 1:59. Although she ultimately fell short against Sara Sterner from North Central.
Freshman Aspen Blasko had an impressive tournament, finishing just short of claiming first place. She dominated her early matches, pinning three opponents. In the semifinals, she showcased her skills with a tech fall victory, winning 10-0. However, in a closely contested championship round, Blasko came up just short, losing 10-8.
Claire Agostini kicked off her season in the 160 weight class with an impressive performance, reaching the semifinals. She dominated her first three matches, achieving tech falls and not allowing her opponents to score a single point. Although she came up short in her final match, Agostini's strong start showcases her potential for the season ahead.
Other Lakers also showcased their talents in today's competition. Freshman Ana Malovich competed in the 117 weight class, winning her first match against Delaney Rapp from Wisconsin before narrowly losing her second bout with a score of 5-2. In the 124 weight class, freshman Miriam Hopson faced a tough challenge, falling in her first round and heading to the consolation bracket. . Finally, Olivia Heft rounded out the Lakers' efforts in the 124 weight class, falling in the first round with a close score of 12-7.
In the 145 weight class, Elleni Johnson showcased her skills by dominating her first match with a 10-0 victory. However, she faced a challenge in her final match in the regular bracket of the day, coming up just short with a score of 4-3.
Aaliyah Grandberry also competed in the 207 weight class but was eliminated in the first round. She competed in the consolation bracket and came up just shy of third place.
The Lakers are gearing up to head to Adrian College in Adrian, Michigan, for the Adrian Open. This event will take place at the Merillat Sports and Fitness Center, starting at 9:00 a.m.
