Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#3 Lakers Defeat Thomas More

CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY. – The third-ranked GVSU women's basketball team went on the road to Thomas More for a Friday afternoon matchup. Just like in their previous five games, the Lakers took an early lead and never looked back, coming away with a 71-34 win. They now are 6-0 to begin the season for the third straight season.

The Lakers never trailed in the game, scoring the first four points, as part of a 15-4 run to open the game. Kathryn Schmidt, Hadley Miller, and Abrie Cabana all hit threes to close out the run. GVSU closed out the first 10 minutes of action up 21-8.

An 8-0 run to begin the second quarter pushed the Laker lead above 20 points, as MacKenzie Bisballe started it off with a layup, then Paige Vanstee and Avery Zeinstra each connected from deep. The lead only dipped back under 20 points the rest of the game, with the Lakers leading 39-17 at the break.

Neither team could get much going on offense to begin the second half, as the Lakers scored the first bucket just over three minutes in. The two squads traded baskets for a few minutes, until GVSU went on a 6-2 run to close out the quarter, up by 30 at 53-33.

The lead grew to 37 following a 7-0 Laker run to start the fourth, five of the points coming from Ellie Droste. Sydney Cherney would connect from deep and Megan Crow hit two layups to help finish off the Saints.

Rylie Bisballe led all scorers with 16 points, adding five rebounds and three assists. Nicole Kamin recorded eight points and three steals, while Kathryn Schmidt and Avery Zeinstra each scored seven points and had five rebounds. The Lakers won the rebounding battle 44-35 and forced 26 turnovers.

GVSU is back home on Thursday to play number five Ashland. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 in the Fieldhouse.
