ALLENDALE, MICH. – The thirteenth ranked GVSU women's volleyball team picked up win number 20 on the season today, defeating Michigan Tech in four sets. They are now 20-1 overall and second in the GLIAC with a 9-1 record.
The Lakers took the match by the scores of 26-24, 25-18, 12-25, and 25-21. Neither team could get much going early in set one, with GVSU clinging to a 7-6 lead. They would manage a 4-0 run to push their lead up to 11-6. Tech would battle back to tie the set at 12 with a 6-1 run. The Huskies would take a late 24-23 lead, but the Lakers got kills from
Paige Sanders and
Kate Goudreau, as well as a block from
Jordyn Gates and Sanders to take the final three points and the set.
Set two saw GVSU get out to a 10-4 start. The Huskies were able to get back within two points multiple times, but they could never get any closer as the Lakers took the second set. In the third set, Michigan Tech dominated the entire game, taking an early lead and never looking back.
GVSU took a 7-3 lead in the fourth set, going on a 5-0 run to take the lead. MTU came back to tie it later in the set at 17. The Lakers took the next four points to retake the lead at 21-17. They pushed it up to 24-19, sitting at game point. The Huskies took the next two points, but
Brianna Stawski and
Kate Goudreau combined for a big block to seal the match.
Jordyn Gates totaled another triple-double, going for 16 kills, 17 assists, and 13 digs.
Meghan O'Sullivan had nine kills, 23 assists, and 10 digs.
Julia Blaney had a team-high 24 digs, while
Kendall Stover had 10. The Lakers had 14 blocks as a team, with
Brianna Stawski with 3.5 and O'Sullivan adding three.
GVSU heads back on the road next weekend, traveling to Davenport on Friday and Ferris State on Saturday.
