HAMMOND, IND. – The 15
th ranked GVSU volleyball team began the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament with two victories on Friday. The Lakers beat Walsh in the opening game, then later that afternoon, they took down Lewis.
Against the Cavaliers, GVSU won the match by the scores of 25-7, 25-21, 27-29, and 25-17.
Jordyn Gates led the way with a monster performance, tallying 15 kills, 35 assists, and 11 digs, while swinging at a .464 clip.
Paige Sanders had 14 kills on a .417 swinging percentage, while
Meghan O'Sullivan tallied a 10-kill, 17-assist, and 15-dig triple-double.
Julia Blaney had 25 kills. As a team, GVSU totaled 11 blocks and served eight aces.
In the second game of the day, GVSU again won in four sets, this time taking down Lewis 25-19, 25-17, 20-25, and 25-22. Sanders led the way with 14 kills, hitting .500 in the match. Gates and O'Sullivan each notched another triple-doubles, as Gates had 13 kills, 30 assists, and 22 digs, while O'Sullivan totaled 12 kills, 31 assists, and 11 digs.
Brianna Stawski added 12 kills and Blaney recorded 30 digs.
The Lakers will play one more game tomorrow, taking on UMSL at 2:00 CST/3:00 EST.
