HAMMOND, IND. – The 15
th ranked GVSU volleyball team closed out a perfect weekend at the Midwest Region Crossover Tournament, taking down UMSL Saturday afternoon. The win moved the Lakers to 18-1 overall, tying the 2006 team for the best start to the season in program history.
The Lakers dropped set one to the Tritons 20-25, but responded to win the next four 25-14, 25-20, and 25-19. In the opening set, UMSL got out quick, going up 12-4. GVSU tried battling back, getting within four at 24-20, but the Tritons got the final point to take the set. In set two, it was the Lakers getting out quick, going up 10-4. UMSL cut it to two at 12-10, but GVSU went on a 9-2 run to take control at 21-12. They were able to finish it out from there and tie the match at one.
GVSU again started hot in set three, beginning up 5-1. The Tritons came back to take a 14-11 lead, one they would later push up to 18-14. The Lakers answered back to tie it at 18, then took seven of the final nine points to the set. UMSL went up 7-2 to begin the fourth set, but once again the Lakers answered, bringing it within one at 7-6. The Tritons pushed their lead to 12-7, but GVSU went on a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the match at 14-12. UMSL scored the next four to retake the lead. That run was answered with a 4-0 run from the Lakers to go up 18-16. UMSL tied it at 19, but the Lakers finished it out from there, scoring the final six points to take the match 3-1.
Jordyn Gates recorded her third triple-double of the weekend, totaling 12 kills, 27 assists, and 14 digs.
Meghan O'Sullivan also had a triple-double, notching 12 kills, 20 assists, and 16 digs.
Paige Sanders and
Kate Goudreau each had 10 kills, while
Julia Blaney had 12 digs.
The Lakers are back in GLIAC action next weekend, returning home to play Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech.
