ALLENDALE, MICH. – This afternoon was a battle of the only two teams undefeated in GLIAC play in women's basketball, as GVSU welcomed in Northern Michigan. The game was tight for much of way before the Lakers were able to pull away in the second half to win 64-47. Grand Valley is now 12-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in conference play.
Both offenses started out hot with Northern Michigan holding a 14-9 lead at the media timeout, with
Rylie Bisballe contributing all nine Laker points. The Wildcats would hit a three out of the timeout to lead by eight, and ultimately led 23-16 at the end of the period.
From that point on the Laker defense was locked in, only allowing 24 points the rest of the way. GVSU opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to get within one at 23-22. After a Wildcat basket, the Lakers did tie it on an
Ellie Droste triple, and eventually took the lead on four straight points from
Ava Scanlon. Northern Michigan would answer back, ending the half on a 6-2 run to retake the lead at 32-31 heading into the locker rooms.
Four straight points from Bisballe put the Lakers back in the lead to begin the second half, and this time they would not give it up.
Nicole Kamin would hit an and-1 jumper and foul shot, followed by a three as well that put GVSU up 47-40 late in the third quarter. After the Wildcats got it down to five,
Abrie Cabana buried a three-pointer, putting GVSU up 50-42 at the end of the quarter.
Kamin would extend the lead up to 10 with a jumper to open the play in the fourth.
Megan Crow would hit two straight baskets after a Wildcat bucket, which started 12-3 run that put the game away for the Lakers and moved them to atop the GLIAC standings.
Nicole Kamin and
Rylie Bisballe each had 12 points, with Bisballe scoring 10 in the first half, and Kamin had 12 in the second half. Kamin also had nine rebounds and two blocks, while Bisballe grabbed six boards and dished out three assists.
