ALLENDALE, MICH. – It was the sixth edition of Sawyers Day this afternoon in Allendale, as Parkside came into town. The defense got the Sawyers out to an early lead, then the offense erupted in the second half to give Grand Valley the 89-57 victory over the Rangers. The victory moves them to 17-2 overall and keeps them atop the GLIAC at 8-1.
Grand Valley got out to a hot start, racing out to an 8-2 lead less than four minutes into the game. After Parkside cut it to four, the Sawyers ended the quarter on a 9-0 run, as
Molly Anderson buried a triple and
Rylie Bisballe finished it off with consecutive layups.
Leading 17-4 heading to open the second quarter, GVSU continued to dominate in the paint and get to the free throw line. Of the 17 points in the quarter, nine came from the charity stripe and the other eight were scored in the paint. At the half, the Sawyers held a 13-point advantage at 34-21.
The offense came alive in the third quarter, as GVSU scored 30 points, hitting six threes in the process.
Abrie Cabana led the charge, making four from deep, scoring 14 points in the quarter. Bisballe also connected on two three-pointers for the Sawyers, as they brought their lead up over 20 points at 64-40 with 10 minutes to play.
Bisballe buried another triple early in the fourth quarter, one of seven threes the Sawyers would hit in the period. Cabana and
Avery Zeinstra hit consecutive triples as the lead grew above 30 points midway through the quarter. Anderson would connect from deep again, followed by one from
Hadley Miller, and two more from Zeinstra to round out the shooting barrage and keep Grand Valley undefeated on home court.
Rylie Bisballe led the way with a near double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds.
Nicole Kamin and
Abrie Cabana each had 17 points, with Kamin also grabbing six boards.
Paige Vanstee also was close to a double-double, with 12 points and nine rebounds.
