ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team defeated Wayne State 74-70 Saturday (Jan. 13) evening. The Lakers improve 4-1 in the GLIAC and 7-8 overall, while Wayne State falls to 1-5 in the GLIAC and 7-8 overall.
Ethan Alderink led the Lakers tying another career high with 16 points in consecutive games. Alderink shot 6-13 from the field and hauled in three rebounds.
Trevor Smith scored 14 points on 6-10 shooting and dished out three assists.
Mason Docks added 11 points and dished out a game high five assists.
GVSU shot 41% from the field and knocked down 11 three pointers at a 39% clip. The Lakers outscored the Warriors 24-22 in the paint and GVSU swiped 10 steals in the win.
After back-and-forth action through the first six minutes of play, the Warriors built a 10-0 run to take an 11-point lead with just over eight minutes to play in the first half. The Lakers answered with an 9-2 run to cut the deficit to four with under six minutes to play in the first. GVSU would head to the locker room down five.
In the second half, the Lakers tied the game early off an Alderink hook shot in the paint. GVSU took the lead on the next possession on a Smith driving layup at the 16:00 minute mark. After Wayne State converted an and one to regain the lead. Docks responded with an and one of his own to put GVSU up 48-46 and then notched another and one the very next possession.
The Lakers extended their lead to nine for their largest lead of the game with over five minutes remaining on a
Jalen Charity made three. After Wayne State made a late run to cut the Laker lead to two with under two minutes remaining, Smith drained a clutch three as the shot clock expired with :54 seconds remaining to put the Lakers up five to seal the win.
The Lakers will go on the road next weekend to continue their GLIAC schedule. GVSU will travel to Sault Ste. Marie to face Lake Superior State on Thursday (Jan. 18) at 7:30 PM and then will travel to Big Rapids to face rival Ferris State on Saturday (Jan. 20) at 3:00 PM.
