GVSU - SVSU Highlights
ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State men's basketball team picked up a huge come from behind victory against Saginaw Valley State Thursday (Jan. 11) night. The Lakers improve to 3-1 in the GLIAC and 6-8 overall, while Saginaw Valley State falls to 2-3 in the GLIAC and 9-5 overall.
It was an all-around team effort tonight for the Lakers as six players scored in double figures.
William Dunn and
Ethan Alderink led the Lakers with 16 points each. Dunn knocked down four three's and pulled down five rebounds, while Alderink hauled in four rebounds.
Trevon Gunter and
Mason Docks each scored 12 points. Gunter brought down four rebounds, while Docks dished out four assists.
Jalen Charity and
Trevor Smith each added 11 points.
The Lakers shot 49% from the field including 60% in the second half and 13-33 from behind the arc. GVSU shot a season best 91% from the free throw line. The Lakers dished out 19 assists and had 22 points from the bench.
Saginaw Valley State jumped to an early lead and went up by double digits with 12 minutes remaining in the opening half. The Cardinals went up 28-14 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half for their largest lead of the game. The Lakers battled back and cut the deficit to six on a pair of Docks free throws just before the end of the half.
In the second half, the Cardinals built up their lead back to eight, but the Lakers quickly cut the deficit in half on a Dunn three pointer five minutes into the half. The Lakers would tie the game at 54-54 on a
Kohen Thompson mid-range jumper and would take their first lead of the game on the next possession on a made layup by Alderink.
Both teams would exchange baskets over the next three minutes of action. Charity put the Lakers 63-57 on a made three, but the Cardinals quickly answered with a three and a layup to pull within one.
GVSU answered with an and one layup by Smith and a three made by Dunn to claim a four-point lead that was cut to one again on a SVSU made three. SVSU regained the lead on an and one layup, but Alderink knocked down a big three with under six minutes left to put the Lakers back up one.
After both teams scored to bring the Lakers back up one, Docks knocked down a tough driving layup to go up 76-73 with 4:30 minutes remaining. Both teams traded multiple buckets over the next two minutes as Charity would put the Lakers back up four on a layup assisted by Docks with two minutes to go. After GVSU got a stop, Smith drained a big three to put the Lakers up seven that would seal the win.
