GVSU Lacrosse Moves On To GLIAC Championship Game

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The top-seeded Lakers opened postseason play with a GLIAC Tournament semifinal matchup against four seed Davenport, and they showed why they were regular season conference champs, as they dismantled the Panthers 21-2.

The game was also full of milestones, starting with Maggie Hammer appearing in the 74th game of her career, the most of any player in program history. She then scored a hat trick, which gave her 100 career goals, becoming the 12th player in history to reach that mark. Molly Bursinger surpassed 200 career points today as well, recording five in total, as she is just the third player in the program's history to go over 200 points. Before the game 10 Lakers were also honored with their All-GLIAC awards.

Once the game started it was all Lakers, as they started the game on a 10-0 run, scoring five goals in each of the first two quarters. In the first period, Maddy Champagne scored off a pass from Bursinger, and then Champagne assisted a Sydney Stone goal. Hammer and Bursinger then scored consecutive goals before Ella Boose scored off a pass from Ashleigh Rothe to put GVSU up 5-0 after one.

In the second, Bursinger and Champagne each scored twice and Rothe added her first and the Laker defense shut out the Panthers after 30 minutes to lead 10-0 at the half.

Davenport got on the board to begin the third quarter, getting two successive goals, but they were quickly answered by the Lakers. Jill Dennison scored her first career goal to start the Laker run, followed by goals from Hammer, Champagne, Bursinger, and Boose to push their lead to 15-2 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, the Lakers run continued, as Stone scored twice, Hammer and Ellie Bernard each had unassisted goals, and Rothe also netted two goals, one off an assist from Champagne and the other coming from the stick of Bernard. The win moved GVSU to 13-4 this year and punched their ticket to Sunday's Championship game.

Molly Bursinger and Maddy Champagne each had four goals, while Maggie Hammer, Ashleigh Rothe, and Sydney Stone all tallied hat tricks. Ella Boose scored twice and Ellie Bernard and Jill Dennison each had one goal. Champagne dished out two assists, and Bursinger, Rothe, and Bernard had one.

The Lakers once again dominated the draw controls, outpacing Davenport 18-7, as Bursinger nabbed seven, Rothe had five, and Aislynn Alkire came away with three. Kaylyn Cater got the win in goal, saving three shots and grabbing four groundballs. Elora Ferrie caused three turnovers and had one groundball, while Rothe and Champagne each caused two turnovers.

The Lakers will play Northern Michigan in Sunday's championship game. The match will begin at noon at the GVSU Lacrosse Facility.
