ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State baseball team is set to play Davenport in the crosstown showdown for a five-game series this weekend. The Lakers will host the Panthers for three games and will travel to Caledonia for two games.
Game one begins tomorrow (April 28) at Davenport with first pitch set for 3:00 PM. The Lakers will return home for games two and three on Saturday (April 29) for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM. GVSU will then travel back to Davenport on Sunday (April 30) for a single nine inning game at 3:00 PM. The Lakers and Panthers will conclude the series in Allendale on Tuesday (May 2) for a single nine inning game at 3:00 PM.
The Lakers took three games out of four last weekend on the road at Purdue Northwest. GVSU hit .361 as a team with 14 doubles and five home runs.
Logan Anderson led the Lakers with four doubles and six runs batted in last weekend.
Kyle Nott launched two home runs and drove home five RBIs, while
Jake Rydquist hit three doubles and seven hits on the weekend.
Nick Rutkowski earned his eighth win of the season after tossing seven innings allowing just one earned run off five hits. Rutkowski struck out three batters and did not allow a walk.
GVSU enters this weekend series with a 26-12 overall record and 13-8 GLIAC mark. Sophomore
Jonas Gulbrandsen leads the team with a .367 batting average with eight doubles and 27 RBIs. Gulbrandsen launched his first collegiate home run last weekend. Senior
Spencer Nelson is hitting .350 with a team leading six home runs and nine doubles. Nelson has also notched three triples and 82 total bases. Junior
Nathan Logan leads the Lakers with 33 RBIs and is hitting .346 on the season with eight doubles and four home runs. Junior
Nick Rutkowski leads the GLIAC with eight wins and a 1.50 ERA. Rutkowski has tossed five complete games and has earned the win in his last eight consecutive starts. Sophomore
Colby Phipps is 6-2 on the season with a 3.83 ERA and has tossed two complete games. Senior
Sam Leck leads the conference with five saves.
Davenport enters the weekend with a 21-20 overall record and 15-6 GLIAC mark. The Panthers are coming off a four-game sweep against Parkside last weekend where they outscored the Rangers 46-17. Davenport is hitting .295 as a team this season led by senior Ben Mets who is batting .382 on the season with nine doubles and four triples. Gaetano Vallone is hitting .340 with a team leading 12 doubles and 34 runs batted in.
The Panther pitching staff is posting a 5.28 team ERA. Isaac Van Dyke leads the rotation with a 4-1 record with a 2.51 ERA in 10 appearances making eight starts. Carson Fischer is 4-6 on the season with a 3.76 ERA in 11 starts and leads the rotation with 54 strikeouts. Logan Bursick-Harrington is tied for second in the conference with four saves.
