Two Lakers Earn Major GLIAC Awards, Five Named to All-GLIAC Teams

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State women's tennis team captured two major GLIAC conference awards and paced five on the All-GLIAC teams for the 2023 season. The awards were announced today (April 21) by the conference.
 
Junior Vasileia Griva was named the GLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year and All-GLIAC First Team. Griva becomes the third Laker to be named GLIAC Player of the Year in program history. She helped lead the Lakers to an undefeated GLIAC 7-0 record and a GLIAC Regular Season Championship. The Junior went 5-2 in league play all from the No. 1 position. Overall, Griva is 11-7 in singles action with nine wins at the top position. Griva is currently ranked number 14 in doubles paired with Taylor Barrett. The two have posted nine wins this season all from the top doubles position. 
 
Head Coach Sam Schall has been named the GLIAC Women's Tennis Coach of the Year. Schall becomes the fifth Laker head coach to earn GLIAC Coach of the Year honors in program history. In her fourth season, Schall guided the Lakers to a perfect 7-0 GLIAC mark and 13-5 overall record. The Lakers won the GLIAC Regular Season Championship for the second consecutive year under Schall. The Lakers currently sit number two in the Midwest regional rankings and are the No. 1 seed in the GLIAC tournament.
 
Senior Taylor Barrett earned All-GLIAC first team honors. Barrett posted a 13-5 dual singles record and a perfect 7-0 conference record. All seven wins and 11 overall wins came from the No. 2 position. In doubles, Barrett has notched nine wins all from the No. 1 position. Paired with Vasileia Griva, the two are currently ranked as the number 14th doubles pair in the country. 
 
Freshman Rachel Sam and Anna Soteras were named to the All-GLIAC second team. Soteras notched a 13-5 dual singles record and was 6-1 in GLIAC play. She went 12-5 from the No. 4 singles position including all six wins from that spot. In doubles, Soteras posted three wins from the No. 3 position. Sam earned 11 dual singles wins in her freshman campaign with ten from the No. 3 position. Sam posted a 12-6 doubles record including four conference wins all at the No. 2 position. Sophomore Estefania Hernandez was named All-GLIAC honorable mention. Hernandez went 12-5 in dual singles this season including a 6-1 GLIAC record. She claimed all 12 wins from the No. 5 singles position. In doubles, Hernandez earned 11 wins all from the No. 2 position and four wins in GLIAC play.
 
The Lakers claimed the GLIAC Regular Season Championship after earning a perfect 7-0 record. GVSU is the number one seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will play in the semifinals tomorrow (April 22) at 3:00 PM.
