HAMMOND, Ind. – The Grand Valley State baseball team resumes GLIAC action when they travel to Hammond, Indiana for a four series at Purdue Northwest beginning tomorrow (April 21) at 4:00 PM. The Lakers are 23-11 on the season and 10-7 in the GLIAC.
The two teams faced each other earlier in the season at Purdue Northwest splitting a doubleheader. The Lakers won game one 7-3, while Purdue Northwest took game two 7-2. GVSU leads the all-time series 11-8.
Sophomore
Jonas Gulbrandsen leads the Lakers with a .376 batting average and eight doubles this season. Senior
Spencer Nelson is hitting .348 with a GLIAC leading six home runs. Nelson also leads the team with three triples and eight doubles. Junior
Nathan Logan leads the team with 29 RBI's while hitting .346 with three home runs, three triples, and eight doubles.
The Laker pitching staff has notched a 4.86 team ERA this season. Junior
Nick Rutkowski leads the conference with seven wins and a 1.53 ERA. Rutkowski has won in his last seven outings including tossing five complete games in that span. He has struck out 39 batters while only walking 12 and holding opponents to a .214 average. Sophomore
Colby Phipps has posted a 6-1 record with a 3.35 ERA. Phipps has struck out 30 batters while only walking seven and has tossed one complete game. Senior
Sam Leck leads the bullpen with four saves.
Purdue Northwest enters the weekend series with a 9-25 record and 4-14 GLIAC mark. The Pride are led by graduate Ray Hilbrich who is hitting .384 with 43 hits, 20 RBI, and six home runs. Junior Luke Montgomery is batting .371 on the season with 23 runs scored and four doubles. The Pride pitching staff has posted a 7.85 team ERA. Freshmen Conor Pangburn and Sam Carlisle lead the team with 29 strikeouts. Noah Burgh and Joe Buikema have each posted a 2-3 record.
