SOUTH EUCLID, OHIO – In one of their best offensive showings of the season, the Grand Valley women's lacrosse team dominated Notre Dame College, getting goals from 10 different players, en route to a 19-2 victory. The win extends GVSU's winning streak to four games and improves them to 7-4 this season.
The Lakers opened an early 4-0 lead, behind goals from
Molly Bursinger,
Ella Boose, off an assist from
Kate DeYoung, then
Maddy Champagne scored twice in a row. After the Falcons got one back, DeYoung scored her first of the game, as GVSU went up 5-1 after the first quarter.
GVSU got a power play opportunity to begin the second quarter, and
Maggie Hammer took advantage of that and scored to put the Lakers up by five.
Ashleigh Rothe and DeYoung followed that up with two more goals. NDC scored once more, cutting it to 8-2, but DeYoung, Bursinger, and Champagne all scored before the half, putting the Lakers up 11-2 at the half.
Maddy Champagne scored her fourth goal of the game, and the 100
th of her Laker career at the start of the third quarter, becoming the 11
th player in program history to reach that milestone.
Later in the third quarter, Hammer, Rothe,
Ellie Bernard, and Bursinger all scored to extend the Laker lead up to 16-2 heading into the fourth quarter.
Grace Bancroft continued the Laker scoring run by scoring her first goal of the contest, coming off an assist from
Hailey Crittenden. Crittenden then found the back of the net herself, her goal coming off a pass from Boose.
Zoe Ziegler rounded out the scoring for the day, netting her first of day off an assist from Bancroft.
Maddy Champagne led the way with four goals and seven draw controls.
Kate DeYoung and
Molly Bursinger each had a hat trick, with Bursinger controlling five draws.
Maggie Hammer and
Ashleigh Rothe scored two goals apiece, while
Ella Boose,
Hailey Crittenden,
Zoe Ziegler,
Ellie Bernard, and
Grace Bancroft all scored once. DeYoung, Crittenden, Boose, and Bancroft all had an assist.
The Lakers dominated draw controls, winning 18, compared to only seven for the Falcons. The defense forced 10 turnovers, and grabbed 15 groundballs, led by Rothe's four and
Hope Leinen with three.
Sarah Krause had a second half shutout in net, saving four shots total and grabbing two groundballs for her third win of the season.
