AUGUSTA, MICH. – The Grand Valley State men's golf team went into the GLIAC Medal Match Play as the number one seed and they lived up to that seeding, taking down Purdue Northwest and Wayne State en route to the GLIAC Championship. This title is the ninth in program history for the Lakers.
RESULTS
The Lakers were joined in the semifinals by two seed Wayne State, three seeded Ferris State, and fourth seeded Purdue Northwest. GVSU defeated PNW 4-1 in the semifinals to advance, while Wayne State beat Ferris 3-1-1 to move on. in the finals, the Lakers pulled off a clean sweep, winning the title by a perfect 5-0 score. These two rounds were medal match play, where each match is scored by the cumulative number of strokes won by rather than the number of holes won. The player up by the most strokes after 18 holes wins the matchup.
Against the Pride,
Charles DeLong shot a 63 to win his matchup by eight strokes, while
Drew Coble shot a 67 to win by four strokes.
Nick Krueger and
Bryce Wheeler each won by two strokes, with Krueger shooting a 66 and Wheeler carding a 68.
Charlie Cooley carded a 71 in his matchup.
In the finals, all five Lakers won their matchups, led by Krueger and Wheeler each winning theirs by five strokes. Krueger shot a 69 and Wheeler shot a 71 in their victories. Cooley won his matchup by three strokes, carding a round of 70, while DeLong shot a 68 to win by two strokes. Coble shot a round of 70, winning by one stroke.
GVSU is off until NCAA Regionals which take place from May 11
th through the 13
th at The Bridges Golf Club in Winona, Minnesota.
