Lakers Set to Host Wayne State Friday and Saturday

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State baseball team is set to host Wayne State for a pair of doubleheaders beginning Friday (April 14) and Saturday (April 15) at the GVSU Baseball Field. Game one on Friday is set for 1:00 PM and game one on Saturday is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
 
The Lakers lead the all-time series 113-74 against the Warriors. The two teams played against each other two weeks ago in a doubleheader at the GVSU Baseball Field where the Warriors defeated the Lakers in both games. The Warriors enter the weekend in first place in the GLIAC with a 12-1 GLIAC mark, while GVSU is in second place with an 8-5 GLIAC record. 
 
The Lakers are coming off an impressive 19-11 win over regional foe Northwood Tuesday. The Lakers notched 21 hits and launched three home runs for their 20th win of the season. The offense is hitting .321 as a team with eight players hitting over .325 on the season. Sophomore Jonas Gulbrandsen leads the team this season with a .395 batting average, eight doubles and 22 runs batted in. Senior Spencer Nelson is batting .521 over his last five games with five home runs and eight runs batted in. On the season, Nelson is hitting .330 including 31 runs scored, 38 hits, and 15 runs batted in. Connor Schuman has notched a .376 batting average in his junior campaign. Kyle Nott leads the Lakers with 35 runs scored and 22 walks. Nott broke the GVSU single-game record last weekend with five walks in the 15-4 win at Parkside.
 
Nick Rutkowski leads the Laker pitching staff and ranks first in the GLIAC with a 1.37 ERA and was named GLIAC Pitcher of the Week last week after tossing his fourth complete game of the season in a 3-1 win at Parkside. Rutkowski leads the Lakers and ranks tied for first with six wins and is sixth in the conference with 34 strikeouts. Sophomore Colby Phipps has notched 2.75 ERA and is also tied for first in the GLIAC with six wins. 
 
Wayne State enters the weekend with a 25-4 overall record. The Warriors are hitting .311 as a team on the season led by graduate Chris Tanderys who is hitting .389 on the season. Tanderys leads the GLIAC with 41 runs batted in. Senior Rudy Ramirez is hitting .380 on the season with 31 runs batted in and a team leading 34 runs scored. Graduate Hunter DeLanoy leads the Warriors with 13 doubles and four home runs, while hitting .364 this season. 
 
The Warrior pitching staff has posted a 3.33 team ERA led by senior Karter Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick is 6-0 on the season with a 2.06 ERA including three complete games. Senior Ryan Korolden is 5-1 on the season with a 2.72 ERA including two complete games.
