Lakers Stay Perfect In GLIAC Play With Win Over Davenport

GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. – Backed by their best offensive output of the season the GVSU women's lacrosse team dominated rival Davenport to move to 9-4 overall and 4-0 in GLIAC play. Three players recorded hat tricks to lead GVSU to a 21-10 victory.

After Davenport got on the board first, GVSU responded with three straight goals, starting with a power play goal from Hailey Crittenden, followed up by one from Molly Bursinger, and closed out by Ella Boose getting an assist from Maddy Champagne to put GVSU up 3-1. The Panthers would answer with two more to close the quarter with the score knotted at three.

The second quarter was all Lakers, as they erupted for 11 goals to take a commanding lead. They started on an 8-0 scoring run, getting unassisted goals from Sydney Stone, two straight from Champagne, Kate DeYoung, and Molly Bursinger. Bursinger then found Grace Bancroft for a goal before Champagne scored two more times, putting the Lakers up 11-3. Davenport scored to end the streak, but the Lakers put three more on the board before the half, as DeYoung assisted Ashleigh Rothe, then Champagne scored off an assist from Bursinger, and finally Bursinger scored one of her own as GVSU led 14-4 at the break.

Bursinger kept scoring to begin the third quarter, netting one less than a minute in. Rothe then scored again, this time getting an assist from Champagne. DU scored twice in a row to cut into the lead, but Champagne and DeYoung each scored to answer back before the Panthers struck right before the end of the quarter, but still trailed 18-7.

Davenport scored twice more to begin the fourth. The Lakers responded quickly though, as Rothe scored once, then she found Bursinger for another goal, and finally Crittenden struck once again, getting an assist from Bancroft. The Panthers scored the final goal of the contest, but it was too late, as GVSU stayed perfect in GLIAC play and extended their winning streak to six games.

Maddy Champagne tallied six goals, two assists, and four draw controls, while Molly Bursinger scored five times to go along with two assists and eight draw controls. Ashleigh Rothe had a hat trick and an assist, as well as three draw controls. Hailey Crittenden and Kate DeYoung each scored twice, while Sydney Stone, Ella Boose, and Grace Bancroft each had one. DeYoung and Bancroft also had one assist apiece.

Elora Ferrie picked up two groundballs, while Bursinger caused two of the Lakers six caused turnovers. Sarah Krause had two saves to pick up another win in the cage. Audrey Maloney also had three saves in her time as the goalie.
