FINDLAY, OHIO – Led by four hat tricks, the Grand Valley women's lacrosse team put together their strongest offensive output of the season as they took down Findlay 19-10.
Maggie Hammer opened the scoring less than a minute into the game, putting GV up 1-0.
Kylie Waeghe added to that with her first of the season a few minutes later, and after Findlay got one back, Hammer scored twice more to secure a hat trick just over halfway through the first quarter. The Oilers scored once more, but GVSU responded with goals from
Molly Bursinger and then
Hailey Crittenden scored off an assist from
Maddy Champagne with just five seconds left in the quarter.
Sydney Stone opened the second quarter with her first goal of the game to put the Lakers up 7-2 early in the second quarter. After an Oilers goal, Hammer and Bursinger each scored once again to push the lead up to six. Findlay got one back before the half, but still trailed 9-4.
Champagne scored her second goal of the game to start the second half, doing it unassisted. Findlay responded with one of their own, but GVSU would score two straight, getting goals from Crittenden, off an assist from Waeghe, then
Grace Bancroft scored her first career goal off a pass from
Zoe Ziegler. Findlay would answer with three straight goals, but GVSU would go on a 4-0 run from there to go up 16-8. Champagne found Hammer and Crittenden on consecutive goals before Crittenden scored one unassisted, finishing off her hat trick. Champagne closed off the run with a goal of her own to put GV up 16-8.
Findlay scored to begin the fourth quarter, but GVSU went on another scoring run, this one a 3-0 run. Brancroft netted her second of the game, off an assist from
Ashleigh Rothe, before Champagne and Bursinger each scored once again. The goal for Champagne capped of her third hat trick of the season. Findlay ended the scoring with a late goal, but it wasn't enough as they remained winless against the Lakers.
Maggie Hammer led the way with five goals, while
Molly Bursinger had four, and
Maddy Champagne and
Hailey Crittenden each had three.
Grace Bancroft scored twice, and
Kylie Waeghe and
Sydney Stone scored once. Champagne added three assists, while
Kylie Waeghe,
Zoe Ziegler, and
Ashleigh Rothe each had one.
In net
Audrey Maloney made six saves in just over 50 minutes.
Hope Leinen, Rothe, and Crittenden each picked up multiple groundballs and Rothe caused two turnovers.
