Lacrosse Falls To UIndy In In Close Battle

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's lacrosse team opened up their home schedule by welcoming the top-ranked University of Indianapolis. The Lakers gave the Greyhounds all they could handle, but ultimately fell just short, losing 13-12.

The Lakers started the scoring with three consecutive unassisted goals from Maggie Hammer, Molly Bursinger, and Kate DeYoung. UIndy got two straight to bring them within one, but a second goal from DeYoung put GV back up by two. The Greyhounds struck right before the end of the quarter, but still trailed 4-3 after one.

The Lakers pushed their lead back up to three, with goals from Bursinger and Hammer, making it 6-3. Indianapolis would respond though, ending the quarter with four consecutive goals to lead 7-6 at the half.

Sydney Stone tied the game up at seven just over a minute into the second half with her first goal of the game. The Greyhounds scored twice in a row after that, before Maddy Champagne found DeYoung for her third goal of the game, bringing the Lakers' deficit back down to one. UIndy struck again, but Stone answered right back before the end of the quarter, as the Lakers trailed 10-9 heading into the final quarter.

After the Greyhounds opened the scoring in the fourth, Champagne found Stone, who capped off her own hat trick to bring it within one once again. The two teams traded goals the rest of the way, as Stone answered a Greyhound goal with her fourth of the game, this one from Bursinger, and Maddy Champagne scored with just under two minutes to play to make it 13-12 UIndy, but they could not get any closer and fell to 3-3 on the season.

Sydney Stone scored four goals, Kate DeYoung had three, and Maggie Hammer and Molly Bursinger each had two, while Maddy Champagne scored once. Champagne added two assists and Bursinger had one. The Lakers dominated the draw controls, winning 21 of 28, with Bursinger had 11 of them, Champagne had four, and Stone gathered three. Kaylyn Cater tallied five saves in net.
