Lakers split doubleheader at Purdue Northwest

Win streak increased and snapped at 10 games

HAMMOND, Ind. – The Grand Valley State baseball team split a doubleheader at Purdue Northwest Monday (March 28) afternoon. The Lakers won game one 7-3 to increase their win streak to 10 games, before having the win streak snapped with a 7-2 loss in game two. GVSU is now 14-5 on the season and 3-1 in conference play.  
 
GAME ONE – W, 7-3
 
Purdue Northwest jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third. After a pair of Laker errors that out runners on second and third, the Pride scored the first run of the game on an RBI groundout. Purdue Northwest added the second run later in the inning on an RBI double to left field.
 
The Lakers answered with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Ayden VanEnkevort got the Lakers on the board with an RBI single to right field scoring Conner McCormack. After a Purdue Northwest error and sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third, Kyle Nott notched an RBI bunt single to tie the game at two. Two batters later, Logan Anderson gave the Lakers the lead with a 2-RBI single to right field scoring Justin Mansager and Nott. Jake Rydquist kept the inning going with a double to right field and Brendan Guciardo increased the Laker lead to 6-1 with a 2-RBI single to right field scoring both Anderson and Rydquist. The Lakers added another run in the fifth inning off a wild pitch that allowed Nott to score. 
 
Rylan Peets got the start on the bump and earned his first win of the season (1-0) after tossing six innings allowing three runs (zero earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts. Josh Schell tossed a scoreless inning of relief not allowing a hit. 
 
The Laker offense recorded eight hits in game one. Kyle Nott led the Lakers going 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Logan Anderson and Brendan Guciardo each had a hit and two runs batted in. Ayden VanEnkevort hit 1-3 at the plate with a run scored and run batted in, while Jake Rydquist batted 1-3 with a run scored. 
 
GAME TWO – L, 2-7
 
Purdue Northwest jumped out to an early lead in game two. The Pride scored one run in the first inning off an RBI single to right field and increased the lead to 4-0 with three runs in the second. Josh Schell came into pitch and escaped out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the second inning to keep the Lakers down four.
 
The Lakers cut the deficit in half in the third inning. MacArthur Graybill led off the inning with a single down the left field line. Next batter Justin Mansager doubled down the left field line to advance Graybill to third. Spencer Nelson drove home Graybill with an RBI single to left field. Kyle Nott brought home Mansager with a sacrifice bunt. Schell pitched out of another bases loaded jam with one out in the bottom half of the third to keep the deficit at two.
 
Purdue Northwest increased their lead back to four in the fourth inning off a pair of Laker errors. The Pride added an insurance run in the eighth inning with an RBI single up the middle to take a 7-2 lead and would hang on for the win.
 
Brendan Pierce got the start and suffered the loss (0-1) allowing four runs off five hits. Josh Schell tossed 1.2 innings pitched in relief and allowed two runs off three hits. Nino Puckett pitched two scoreless innings of relief allowing just one hit. Logan Wynalda tossed three innings of relief allowing one run off three hits. 
 
The Lakers notched six hits in game two. MacArthur Graybill led the Lakers going 2-4 at the plate with a run scored. Justin Mansager went 1-2 with a double and run scored. Brandan Guciardo, Nathan Logan, and Spencer Nelson each recorded a hit.
