GRAND RAPIDS – The Grand Valley State baseball team swept Saginaw Valley in a doubleheader to open up the GLIAC schedule Sunday (March 26) at Cornerstone University. The Lakers improve to 13-4 and move their win streak to nine games and have won their last 13 of 14.
Game One – W, 3-2
GVSU jumped out to an early lead in the top pf the first inning.
Spencer Nelson led off the game with a double to left center. After
Nathan Logan reached on an error that advanced Nelson to third, Jonas Guldbrandsen drove him home with an RBI sacrifice fly.
The Lakers would add to the lead in the fifth inning with two runs to go up 3-0. Gulbrandsen and
Brendan Guciardo hit back-to-back singles with two outs. Next batter,
Jake Rydquist tripled down the left field line to score both Gulbrandsen and Guciardo. Saginaw Valley State scored their only two runs in the bottom of the seventh off a two-run home run to left field, but the Lakers would hang on to win in seven innings.
Nick Rutkowski got the start on the mound and tossed his third complete game in four starts. Rutkowski earned his fourth win of the season (4-1) after tossing seven innings allowing just two runs off seen hits with three strikeouts.
Spencer Nelson led the Lakers going 2-4 at the plate with a double and run scored.
Brendan Guciardo went 1-1 with a run scored and two walks.
Jonas Gulbrandsen hit 1-3 with a run scored, while
Conner McCormack and
Jake Rydquist each added a hit in the win.
Game Two – W, 10-1
The Lakers got off to a fast start by scoring three runs in the first inning. After loading the bases with no outs,
Jonas Gulbrandsen doubled to left field to score
Spencer Nelson and
Kyle Nott. Next batter,
Jake Rydquist scored
Nathan Logan with a sacrifice fly. Saginaw Valley State scored one run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the Laker lead to 3-1.
GVSU added three more runs in the third inning to increase the lead to 6-1.
Nathan Logan opened the inning with a double to left field. Gulbrandsen hit an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error that allowed Logan to score. Next batter, Rydquist notched an RBI double to right field to score Gulbrandsen. Rydquist would score later in the inning on an RBI groundout by
Logan Anderson.
After three scoreless innings by both teams, the Lakers brought another run across the plate in the seventh and added another three runs in the ninth to make it 10-1.

Spencer Nelson. Three batters later, Rydquist notched his third RBI of the game and fifth of the day on a groundout to first base. Anderson singled to shortstop later in the inning to score Logan.
After giving up one run in the first inning, the Lakers held the Cardinals scoreless for the rest of the game.
Colby Phipps got the start on the bump and earned his fourth win of the season (4-0) after tossing six innings allowing just one run off four hits with two strikeouts.
Nino Puckett,
Will Goebel, and
Logan Wynalda each tossed a scoreless inning of relief without allowing a hit.
Jonas Gulbrandsen led the Laker offense going 4-5 at the plate with two doubles, three runs, scored, and two runs batted in.
Nathan Logan went 3-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, and one batted in.
Jake Rydquist hit 2-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored, while
Spencer Nelson batted 2-4 with two runs scored.
