ALLENDALE, MICH. – Grand Valley graduate guard
Emily Spitzley, already one of the most decorated and accomplished players in program history, added to her career honors, as she was named a Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Honorable Mention All-American. She is the first Laker to earn All-American honor since Cassidy Boensch garnered the honors after the 2020 season.
Spitzley adds the All-American honors to her list of accolades for the season, joining her being CCA Second Team All-Region, First Team All-GLIAC, GLIAC All-Defensive Team, GLIAC Tournament MVP, and CSC Academic All-District. She also recorded her 1,000
th career point earlier this season and ranks as the 20
th most prolific scorer in school history. Her and fellow graduate player
Hannah Kulas will go down as the winningest graduating class in program history.
Emily Spitzley averaged 13.7 points on 42.4% shooting from the field, 38.1% from three, and 79.4% from the free throw line. She scored in double-figures 25 times this year, topping out at a career-high 31 points in a win over Parkside. She added 4.0 rebounds a game, as well as totaled 58 assists, 37 steals, and 18 blocks.
Spitzley helped lead the Lakers to their second straight GLIAC regular season title, their first GLIAC Tournament championship since 2006, and their eighth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, where they reached the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship game for the second consecutive season. GVSU finished the season at 31-3, topping 30 wins for the second consecutive season, marking the first time in program history GVSU has reached 30 wins or more in back-to-back campaigns.
