Lakers win seventh straight with 11-3 win at Hillsdale

Have won the last 11 out of 12 games

HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team won their seventh consecutive game after defeating Hillsdale 8-3 on the road Tuesday (March 21) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 11-4 on the season and have won 11 out of the last 12 games. 
 
Hillsdale opened up the scoring in the first inning off a solo home run to left field. The Lakers got on the board in the third inning by scoring two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Kyle Nott walked and advanced to third on a single by Nathan Logan. Next batter, Jonas Gulbrandsen notched an RBI infield single to score Nott. After a wild pitch to advance Logan to third, Connor Schuman hit him home with an RBI groundout. Hillsdale responded in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to tie the game at two.
 
The Lakers regained the lead at 3-2 in the fourth inning. Brendan Guciardo led off the inning with a single to right field and would score later in the inning on a wild pitch. GVSU added to the lead with a big five run sixth inning. Carter Rohman got the scoring started with an RBI double down the left field line. Next at bat, MacArthur Graybill scored off a Hillsdale error. After Spencer Nelson stole second to put runners on second and third, Kyle Nott singled to score Rohman and Nelson to make it 7-2. Nott would score for the second time in the game to make it 8-2 GVSU.
 
After Hillsdale scored a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning to make it an 8-3 GVSU lead, the Lakers answered with a three run eighth inning. Rohman led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by Nelson. Two batters later, Logan notched his third hit of the day with an RBI single to center field that scored Rohman. Nelson would later score off a wild pitch to make it 10-3, and Logan scored off an RBI single to right field by Schuman. 
 
Allan Thorington got the start and allowed just one run off one hit in two innings pitched, while striking out three batters. Colby Phipps earned the win (3-0) after tossing an inning of relief. Rylan Peets tossed two scoreless innings of relief striking out two Hillsdale hitters. Will Goebel, Brendan Pierce, and Josh Schell each tossed one scoreless inning of relief.
 
The offense compiled 12 hits on the afternoon. Nathan Logan led the way going 3-5 with two runs scored and a run batted in. Carter Rohman hit 2-3 with a double, two runs scored, and a run batted in. Kyle Nott and Connor Schuman each notched two RBI's, while Nott added two runs scored. Brendan Guciardo and MacArthur Graybill each went 1-2 with a run scored in the win. 
 
The Lakers will open up GLIAC action this weekend when they face Purdue Northwest in a neutral site doubleheader Saturday (March 25) at 1:00 PM on the campus of Saginaw Valley. GVSU will turn around and face Saginaw Valley in a doubleheader on Sunday (March 26) beginning at 1:00 PM.
