SAGINAW, MICH. – The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field teams dominated the 2023 Indoor GLIAC Championships this weekend, as they both claimed the GLIAC Championships title. The women's squad earned their 24
th consecutive GLIAC title with an overall score of 237 points, Saginaw Valley finished second with 108.5 points and Northern Michigan in third with 84.5 points. On the men's side, the Lakers won with 300 points more than 202 points from Saginaw Valley in second with 98 points and Davenport in third with 89 points.
Day 2 Final Results
Distance
Klaudia O'Malley placed first in the women's mile with a time of 4:49.23 followed by
Maria Mitchell in third with a time of 4:50.96.
Taryn Chapko led the Lakers in the 800m finishing first in a time of 2:08.68. In the 3000m,
Natalie Graber and
Lauren Kiley finished first and second for Grand Valley, Graber took home first with a new GLIAC 300m track record time of 9:24.57 and Kiley second with a personal-best time of 9:29.66.
On the men's side,
Caleb Futter and
Elias Bergman finished back-to-back in the men's mile claiming first and second for the Lakers. Futter finished with a new GLIAC 300m track record and personal-best time of 4:04.15 followed by Bergman with a personal-best time of 4:05.01.
Scott Spaanstra earned first-place in the men's 800m for the Lakers with a time of 1:53.84.
Sprints/Hurdles
Kate Zang took over for the Lakers on Day Two winning both the women's 200m and 400m. Zang finished the 200m in a time of 24.84 and the 400m in a new personal-best time of 56.02, in addition, Zang was named GLIAC Freshman Track Athlete of the Meet and GLIAC Track Athlete of the Meet.
For the men,
Jacody Sikora dominated in the men's 60m and 200m claiming a GLIAC Championship title in both events. Sikora finished the 60m in a time of 6.87 and the 200m with a new personal-best time of 21.44. Sikora was named GLIAC Track Athlete of the Meet and High Point Athlete of the Meet.
Jackson Blanchard and
Steven Harris finished back-to-back in the men's 60m hurdles recording a first and second place finish. Blanchard recorded a first-place finish with a time of 8.19 followed shortly by Harris in a time of 8.20. In the men's 400m,
Ben Ireland took home first-place with a new personal-best time of 47.92 followed by
Myles Rhodes in second with a time of 48.18. Additionally, Ireland earned the GLIAC Freshman Track Athlete of the Meet and Rhodes earned GLIAC Track Athlete of the Year.
Throws
The women's throws team swept the shot put event placing all four athletes in the Top 5.
Emma Richards took home the GLIAC title with a distance of 15.59m followed by
Reette Thorns in second with a distance of 13.95m,
Margaret Stevenson (3
rd) throwing 13.36m and
Erika Beistle (4
th) with a throw of 13.21m. For the men,
Myles Kerner set a new GLIAC record in the men's shot put with a distance of 19.56m earning him a first-place finish and GLIAC Field Athlete of the Meet.
Matt Thomas placed second with a distance of 18.22m.
Jumps
The Laker men swept the men's high jump event as they claimed the Top 3 spots on the day.
Eli Kosiba brought home the gold clearing a new GLIAC record height of 2.21m and earning the honor of GLIAC Field Athlete of the Year.
Jonathan Rankins-James placed second with a new personal-best height of 2.18m with
Jordan Duncan finishing it off for the Lakers in third clearing a height of 2.02m. For the women,
Jenna Doyle claimed a first-place finish in the high jump clearing a height of 1.62m.
The Lakers will head to Virginia Beach, Virginia on March 10
th-11
th to compete at the NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field Championships.
