Lakers Travel to SVSU for GLIAC Championships

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley State men's and women's track and field are set to travel to Saginaw Valley State University to compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, February 25th through the 26th. The Laker women are looking to claim their 24th consecutive GLIAC Indoor Championship title, while the Laker men are hoping to claim their 21st non-consecutive Indoor Championships since 2000.
 
The GLIAC Championships will begin on Saturday the 25th at 10:00 a.m. with the women's pentathlon followed by the field and running events starting at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday, the men's heptathlon will kick-off Day Two with their final three events, followed by field events at 10:30am and running event beginning at 12:15 p.m.

On Saturday, Lindsey Strutz will open the 2023 GLIAC Championships for Grand Valley State as she competes in the women's pentathlon. Strutz recently broke the GVSU school record at the Bill Clinger Classic in the women's pentathlon, claiming first place within each event to record an overall score of 3615. 
 
The weight throws team will kick-off the start of the field events on Saturday, Judith Essemiah, Alaina Omondoe and Shelby Ulven will take on the women's weight throw at 3:00 p.m for the Lakers. Essemiah is looking to claim her third consecutive GLIAC Indoor Championship title this weekend in the women's weight throw. She currently ranks second on the National List with a distance of 20.26m, only .15m out of first. Omondoe ranks eighth on the National List this year with a distance of 19.19m. Omondoe has been a dependable competitor this season, consistently placing in the Top 3. 
 
In the men's weight throw, Jacob Urban, Bryce Reynolds and Shane Byrne will be competing for the Lakers starting at 5:15 p.m. Urban currently ranks 10th on the National List with a distance of 19.90m while Reynolds ranks 13th with a distance of 19.63m. 
 
On the track, Sarah May, Kayce Rypma, and Grace Pagone, will be competing in the women's 5000m. Rypma recorded a second-place finish last year at the GLIAC Indoor Championships with a time of 16:48.06, while May finished in fifth with a time of 17:30.75. 
 
Both men's and women's DMR squads will be competing on Saturday to end Day One of the GLIAC Championships. The women's squad previously broke three records at the GVSU Big Meet with their new personal-best time of 11:18.68. This squad consisting of Klaudia O'Malley, Taryn Chapko, Natalie Graber and Kate Zang currently rank first Nationally for Division II.  
 
On Sunday, Eli Kosbia and Jonathan Rankins-James will begin Day Two for the Lakers as they compete in the men's high jump starting at 10:30 a.m. Kosiba enters the GLIAC Indoor Championships ranked first on the Division II National List and fourth on the Collegiate National List with a height of 2.23m. Last year, Rankins-James took home the 2022 GLIAC Indoor Championship title with a height of 2.16m and Kosiba placed second with a height of 2.06m. 
 
Myles Kerner and Matt Thomas will lead the Lakers as the number one and two seed in the men's shot put after earning first (Kerner) and second (Thomas) place last year. Kerner is ranked first in Division II with a distance of 19.57m and Thomas ranked fifth with a distance of 18.06m. 
 
Natalie Graber, Klaudia O'Malley and Lauren Kiley will compete in the women's 3000m race where they are seeded one, two and three. All three Lakers are currently ranked on the National List, Graber (3rd) with a time of 9:22.48, O'Malley (5th) with a time of 9:28.06 and Kiley (7th) with a time of 9:30.46.
