ALLENDALE, MICH. – In the final game before the new year, the GVSU women's basketball put together a record-setting performance, scoring a program record 127 points in their 127-45 victory over Rochester.
The Lakers broke the previous record of 121, set back in 1975, as they scored 37 points in both the first and second quarters, then closed it out with 22 points in the third and 31 in the final period. This is the second time that GVSU has eclipsed the 100-point mark, as they previously scored 113 in a win over Central State.
After Rochester got an opening 3-0 lead, GVSU answered back with an 8-0 run, as
Rylie Bisballe and
Nicole Kamin each had four points each. The Lakers pushed their lead up to 25-7 following an
Ellie Droste jumper. The offense kept on clicking the rest of the quarter, as they finished on a 12-4 run to lead 37-13.
GVSU began the second quarter on a 24-1 run to push their lead up to 61-14.
Avery Zeinstra scored six straight points late in the quarter, as GVSU outscored Rochester 37-4 over the 10 minutes to lead 74-17 at the break.
Abrie Cabana and Droste both drilled triples to open the second half, putting the Lakers up by over 60 points. The lead grew to 70 points as
Molly Anderson tallied five consecutive points, drilling a three to cap it off. Rochester got it down to only 68 as they hit a late shot to trail 96-68 heading into the fourth.
Two layups from
Ava Scanlon put the Lakers over the century mark early in the fourth.
Hadley Miller hit two triples, with one from
Lexi Plitzuweit in between to bring GVSU to 119 points. A jumper from
Avery Zeinstra tied the previous program record, then Anderson set the new one with a layup, as GVSU led 123-41. Scanlon hit a free throw and a triple for good measure, as the top-ranked Lakers cruised to their 10
th victory of the year.
Seven players scored in double-figures led by
Hadley Miller's career high 17, as she shot 7-8 from the floor.
Megan Crow had 16 points on 8-11 shooting, while pulling down four rebounds.
Abrie Cabana,
Ellie Droste,
Ava Scanlon each added 14 points apiece, with Cabana dishing out seven assists.
Rylie Bisballe had 11 points and six boards, while
Avery Zeinstra had 10 points.
