ALLENDALE, MICH. – In their final game before the holidays, the GVSU women's basketball team had one last test, taking on a 7-4 Thomas More team. The Lakers dominated the Saints, leading for all but 1:19, as they cruised to an 85-36 win.
After Thomas More held a slim 3-2 lead, the Lakers went on a 7-2 run into the first media timeout to lead 9-5. Coming out of the timeout, the offense came alive, ending the quarter on a 15-0 run, getting threes from
Avery Zeinstra,
Ellie Droste, and another from Zienstra, as they led 24-5 after 10 minutes of action.
The hot shooting continued into the second quarter, as
Lexi Plitzuweit and
Abrie Cabana would hit back-to-back triples to put GVSU up 32-8. Droste would hit another, then
Macy Bisballe buried one from deep as the Lakers started to pour it on, outscoring the Saints 28-11 in the quarter. Cabana capped it off with another three in the closing seconds to put the Lakers up 52-16 at halftime.
After a Saints bucket to begin the half,
Hadley Miller joined the action, burying her first triple. Droste then went on a personal 6-0 run to bring the lead up to 61-18. Zeinstra and Cabana would both hit another three and
Ava Scanlon would score four points in the quarter, as GVSU extended their lead up to 71-22 heading into the final period.
Scanlon scored four more points to open the fourth quarter, putting the lead over 50 points. Plitzuweit would hit her second three of the game and
Sarah Wight hit a free throw in her first action as a member of the women's basketball team, as all 12 players made their way into the scorer's book in the win.
Ellie Droste led the way with 17 points on 7-11 shooting.
Ava Scanlon scored a career-high 15 points, going 7-8 from the field.
Abrie Cabana and
Avery Zeinstra each scored 11 points, with Cabana also adding seven boards.
Lexi Plitzuweit tallied 10 points and eight rebounds. As a team, GVSU shot 50.8% from the floor and 52% from three, as they scored their second highest point total of the year. The Lakers held the Saints to 28% shooting from the field and they outrebounded them by 24.
