The #20 Grand Valley State wrestling team will compete at the Midwest Classic Saturday (Dec. 16) and Sunday (Dec. 17) at the University of Indianapolis. The event, which will feature representatives from the top 50 teams in Division II wrestling, is hosted by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). The top 16 wrestlers are seeded and the event is run as a NCAA Championship preview.
The Lakers, who are back on the mat after a 32-year hiatus from varsity wrestling competition, have turned in a solid opening six weeks of competition. GVSU is 5-1 in dual meet wrestling, while also recording solid performances at the Muskegon Open, Michigan State Open and Findlay Open.Â
Freshman
Aaron Lucio (4-4), who is ranked 8th nationally, is seeded fifth at 125, while sophomore
Chris Donathan (11-0), the #3 ranked wrestler nationally, is seeded second at 149. Sophomore
Josh Kenny (10-2) is ranked 10th nationally and seeded fifth at 174, followed sophomore
Wyatt Miller (11-0) who is the number eight seed at 197.
Freshmen
Collin Twigg (11-4) and
Jak Keller (7-8) will compete at 133 and 141, while junior
Caden Jacobs (7-8) will compete at 157. Freshman
Trammel Robinson (18-5) has been impressive as a true freshman and will look to turn some heads at 165. Senior
Seth Konynenbelt (11-6) will compete at 184 and freshman
Owen Hawley (13-5) will wrestle at heavyweight.
