ALLENDALE, MICH. – The GVSU women's basketball opened their season at home, welcoming in Missouri-St. Louis for the first game of the season. The Lakers used strong second and third quarters to pull away from the Tritons, moving to 1-0 after a 58-45 victory.
The Lakers got out to a quick 7-2 lead in the first period, before the Tritons brought it within one at 7-6. GVSU would answer back with an 8-4 run to close out the quarter and lead 15-10 after one.
An 8-0 to begin the second quarter for GVSU pushed their lead up to 13 at 23-10. The two teams traded buckets for a bit, as UMSL got their deficit down to 11, but
Nicole Kamin hit a late three-pointer to give the Lakers a 33-19 lead at the break.
GVSU stayed hot to begin the third, opening on an 11-4 run, capped off by an
Abrie Cabana triple, as they increased their lead to 44-23. After UMSL got a couple of baskets,
Megan Crow made back-to-back layups for the Lakers to give them a 53-31 advantage heading into the final period of play.
The Tritons had a strong fourth quarter, trying to make the comeback attempt, outscoring the Lakers 14-5, but it was too late, as GVSU got the season-opening victory.
Megan Crow scored a career-high 16 points, shooting 8-10 from the field, while grabbing four rebounds.
Ellie Droste added 15 points on 6-8 shooting.
Rylie Bisballe had six points, five assists, and four rebounds, while
Avery Zeinstra also pulled down four boards.
