ALLENDALE, MICH. – For the seventh consecutive campaign, the GVSU women's basketball team begins with a 2-0 record, following their 70-56 victory over Maryville. In the win, junior
Ellie Droste became the 28
th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points!
The first quarter was very low scoring to start, as GV led 6-2 at the opening media timeout. The Lakers go going following that break, going on a 10-2 scoring run, started by two
Ava Scanlon layups, then consecutive threes from
Avery Zeinstra and
Ellie Droste, as they held an 18-11 advantage after one.
A layup from
Nicole Kamin to open the second quarter pushed the Laker lead up to nine, but the Saints responded, bringing their deficit down to two points at 23-21. Zeinstra would answer with another big triple, two free throws from
Megan Crow, then a layup from
Ellie Droste to push it back to a nine-point advantage. Maryville would bring it back down to six at the break, with GVSU up 34-28.
The lead got pushed up to 12 points following threes from Droste and
Abrie Cabana, then after Maryville cut into the lead a bit,
Molly Anderson drilled one from deep to bring it back to a ten-point lead with 5:15 to play in the quarter. The Saints controlled the rest of the third period, ending on a 13-7 run, to only trail by four at 52-48.
It would never get any closer than four, as the Lakers opened with a 7-2 run, capped off by a Scanlon three. From there the Laker offense continued to ice the game away, and with 2:23 remaining in the game,
Ellie Droste made a layup to go over 1,000 career points and put the Lakers up by 15. They would hit a few free throws to put the game away and keep the Lakers undefeated.
Droste got to 1,000 points in style, going off for 24 points on 10-18 shooting to lead all scorers in the game.
Rylie Bisballe had 10 points and nine rebounds, while
Megan Crow had eight points and six rebounds and
Ava Scanlon also added eight points.
Nicole Kamin and
Lexi Plitzuweit each pulled down seven boards.

The Lakers head on their first road trip of the season next weekend, traveling to Findlay on Friday, then they take on Central State Saturday afternoon.
