Women's Basketball Dominates In Rematch With Purdue Northwest

ALLENDALE, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's basketball team returned home and bounced back in a big way, dominating Purdue Northwest 88-47 to move to 18-2 overall and retake the lead in the GLIAC standings at 9-1.

The two teams kept it close to open the game, tied at five with just over three minutes played. From there the Lakers took over, ending the quarter on a 19-6 run, highlighted by a 10-0 run in the middle of the larger scoring run, as they led 24-11 heading into the second quarter.

GVSU kept attacking the rim in the second quarter, getting early layups from Hadley Miller, Rylie Bisballe, and Nicole Kamin. Ellie Droste made the Lakers first three-pointer to put them up 37-20 with two minutes left. From there a layup from Bisballe and a jumper from Abrie Cabana gave GVSU the 41-23 halftime advantage.

A 10-0 run to open the second half for the Lakers extended the lead up to 28 at 51-23. A three from Emily Spitzley gave the Lakers a 58-29 lead, their largest lead at that point of the game. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way before a triple from Cabana to close out the quarter made it 67-39.

Rylie Bisballe made another layup to open the fourth and put GVSU up 30, a lead the Lakers would only continue to extend. Haley Swing returned from an injury to make her season debut and knocked down two free throws for her first points of the year. A layup from Sarah Cunningham was the final basket of the game and gave GVSU their sixth 40 point victory of the season.

Emily Spitzley once again was the team's leading scorer, pouring in 15 points, hitting eight of her 10 free throw attempts. Rylie Bisballe had a near double-double, scoring 14 points and pulling down nine rebounds. Abrie Cabana tallied 10 points and Ellie Droste had eight points and four steals. Hadley Miller had six rebounds and three steals, while holding the Pride's leading scorer to 1-7 shooting. GVSU dominated in the paint, outscoring the Pride 54-14 down low.
