GRAND HAVEN, MICH. – If they felt pressure from being the only Division II school in the event, the Grand Valley men's golf team certainly didn't show it during the opening round of the Folds of Honor Collegiate. After 18 holes of play the Lakers are in ninth place, but just four strokes back of a top three spot, and
Charles DeLong is in a tie for second place.
Florida State is in first place at one under as a team, followed by Liberty (+2) in second, Oregon State and Illinois (+4) in a tie for third, Arizona (+5) in fifth, Clemson (+6) is in sixth place, while Michigan State and Kansas (+7) are tied for seventh, one spot in front of Grand Valley who carded a +8 after one round of play.
Charles DeLong is tied for second place, just one stroke back of the leader, after a strong opening round in which he shot a two under 70 with six birdies.
Drew Coble is even par after recording five birdies over the first 18 holes and sits tied for 12
th.
Bryce Wheeler and
Charlie Cooley are both tied for 45
th, shooting five over 77, combining for five birdies between the two of them.
Nick Krueger is tied for 57
th, carding a 78 (+6) and had one birdie in the first round of the tournament.
"Today was a good start followed by a rough finish in tough conditions," head coach

The Lakers were paired with Florida State and Arizona in their round today, and tomorrow they will play with Michigan State and Kansas, as they are set to tee off at 9:30am.
