SAGINAW, MICH. – The Grand Valley women's volleyball team went back out on the road and got back into the win column with a Battle of the Valleys sweep of GLIAC rival Saginaw Valley.
GVSU took the three sets 25-21, 25-17, and 25-20. The first set featured both teams trading points with each other, neither one really getting much of lead, until GVSU went on a late 4-0 run to take a 19-16 lead, and they were able to hold on from there and take set one. Set two was tied at 15 midway through the set, but the Lakers got hot and ended the game on a 10-2 scoring run to go up two sets to none on the Cardinals. Set three was much like the first two, as it was tied late at 17, but once again the Lakers went on a late run, capped off by a kill from
Jordyn Gates to give GVSU the sweep.
"I thought our players did a great job of responding tonight against a hardworking, very athletic Cardinals team," stated head coach Jason Johnosn. "Our sideout offense was the difference in the first two sets, we were passing really well tonight. Set three was more about hard work and great defensive coverage of our hitters to give us extra attack attempts to score points."
The Cardinals had no answers for
Savannah Thompson all night, as she set a season-high 15 kills on a .542 hitting percentage, while adding 13 digs.
Sarah Wight adds 12 kills, while swinging at a .455 clip.
Jaelianna Primus tallies 10 kills, while
Jordyn Gates and
Rachel Jacquay each dish out 19 assists apiece.
The win moves the Lakers to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play, and now sit tied for third place in the GLIAC.
