KENOSHA, WIS. – The Grand Valley women's volleyball team went on the road this weekend and came away with two wins after beating Purdue Northwest last night and defeating Parkside 3-1 this afternoon. Today's win moves the Lakers to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play as they head into their home opener on Tuesday.
Set one was back and forth throughout, with GVSU using a 6-0 run in the middle of the set to take a 14-9 advantage. Parkside battled back to within two on multiple occasions, but the Lakers held one to take the first set 25-19. The Rangers jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in set two, but this time Grand Valley answered back with a 5-0 run to take a 6-5 advantage. Parkside would recover to take a 15-11 lead midway through the set. The Lakers came back once more and took a 19-18 lead and held on from there, taking the set 25-23, capped off with a
Sarah Wight kill to end it.
In set three, Grand Valley started fast, starting the set on a 13-6 run to take early control of the game. Parkside responded with a 15-7 run to take a 21-20 lead late in the game and they were able to hold on from there to force a fourth set. The final set began with the two teams going back and forth as neither team could really take control of the set, as the Lakers clung to a 9-8 advantage. From there, the Lakers went on a 9-4 run and took control of the set 18-12. The Rangers tried to come back from that deficit, but GVSU ended their chances with kills from
Jordyn Gates and
Sarah Wight to finish off the set and the match with a 25-18 win.
Four different Lakers had ten of more kills as part of a balanced offensive attack, with
Savannah Thompson leading the way with a season-high 14 kills on a .268 hitting percentage while adding 21 digs.
Jordyn Gates put together her third triple-double of the season, recording 12 kills, 26 assists, and 17 digs.
Sarah Wight and
Kendall Stover both had 11 kills offensively, and Wight blocked seven Ranger attacks.
Rachel Jacquay tallied 21 assists and served four aces as well.
"I thought our players did a good job adjusting to changes and dealing with adversity today. We had to make some lineup changes and I thought those that were impacted did a good job competing through it," said head coach
Jason Johnson. "Overall, a good weekend for our team. Anytime you can go on the road and go 2-0 is a good weekend."
