Volleyball Picks Up Second Straight Sweep In GLIAC Play, Taking Down Purdue Northwest

Lakers Get Balanced Attack And Timely Defense To Beat The Pride

HAMMOND, IND. – The Grand Valley women's volleyball team picked up right where they left off last weekend, putting together their second straight 3-0 sweep of a GLIAC opponent on the road, as they swept through Purdue Northwest 25-12, 25-22, and 25-18.

The first set was close to begin with, but then the Lakers used five separate 3-0 runs to pull ahead, and closed out the set with a 4-0 run, getting a service ace from Camille Hurta, a kill from Savannah Thompson, and two attack errors from the Pride to put the first set away. In the second set, GV jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and increased the lead to 11-2 before PNW fought back and made it a 16-14 game. The two teams traded points, but GVSU got two late kills from Thompson and another from Jordyn Gates to go up two sets to none. The third set saw the Pride jump out early, gaining a quick 4-1 lead minutes into the set, and this time the Lakers climbed back in the game, eventually tying it at 10. They took their first lead of the set at 15-14 and never looked back from there, as from that point on they went on a 10-3 run to close out the set and the match.

Kendall Stover added to her team lead in kills tonight, totaling 12 of them to lead the team. Savannah Thompson was right behind her with 11 kills on a .385 swing percentage while also adding 13 digs. Jordyn Gates recorded nine kills, 20 assists, and 12 digs to fill up the stat sheet, while Rachel Jacquay dished out 21 assists and added nine digs. Carley Baughman put together her best performance as a Laker, picking up six kills while hitting at a .417 clip and recording two blocks as well.

"I thought our team played hard and focused tonight," head coach Jason Johnson said. "While the first set went in our favor, once Purdue Northwest found their footing, their defense and the speed of their offense gave us some trouble in set two. However, once we settled down, our side out and transition offense was the difference in the match."
