Volleyball Sweeps #19 Michigan Tech To Pick Up First GLIAC Victory

Four Lakers Tally 10 Or More Kills, While Defense Blocks 13 Attacks

HOUGHTON, MICH. – The ride back from Michigan Tech is a long one, but one that feels better coming off a victory. The Lakers got a great all-around team effort both offensively and defensively today to come out of Houghton with a 3-0 sweep over the nineteenth ranked Huskies, winning 25-22, 25-13, and 26-24.

"I am very happy with the response of our team today. I thought our passing and offense were very solid today, and we got contributions from all our attackers," said head coach Jason Johnson. "The biggest difference today was our teams play at the net, with 13 blocks over the three sets. Our defense did a great job of taking Tech out of their offense."

The first set was even throughout, as both teams couldn't go on much of a run offensively. The Lakers got control late, going up 22-15, but the Huskies battled back to make it 24-22. That would be as close as they would get though, as Savannah Thompson smashed down her second straight kill to give GVSU the first set win. The second set started out close, with GV holding on to a 15-12 advantage, but then the Lakers took over from there, ending the set on a 10-1 run, powered by four kills from Kendall Stover and three from Sarah Wight. Michigan Tech jumped out to an early lead in set three and held on for most of the set, as Grand Valley was fighting the entire set to get back even. The Huskies were up 18-13 late in the set, but the Lakers went on a 5-0 run to tie it up at 18. With the two teams tied at 24, GVSU got some help from the Huskies as Lindy Oujiri had back-to-back attack errors to give the winning points to the Lakers.

Four Lakers led the balanced offensive attack, as Jaelianna Primus and Kendall Stover each had 11 kills, while Sarah Wight and Jordyn Gates each recorded 10. Gates dished out 25 assists and Rachel Jacquay contributed 17. As a team, Grand Valley swung at a .276 clip and recorded 51 kills. The Lakers were a force on the defensive net, recording five solo blocks, four of which came from Wight, and 13 total blocks, with Primus being a part of six block assists.

This win puts the Lakers at 7-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play, with two more GLIAC games coming up next weekend.
