SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Grand Valley State women's tennis team upset #3 Drury in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional with a 4-1 win Friday (May 6) at Cooper Tennis Comlex in Springfield, Missouri. The Lakers improve to 15-6 on the season and will play #2 Southwest Baptist tomorrow (May 7) at John A. Bryant Tennis Center in Bolivar, Missouri at 12:00 PM.
Drury claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. On the singles side, the Lakers went 4-0 to clinch the win with wins at No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 singles.
Vera Griva claimed a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles.
Marija Leko tallied a straight set 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.
Vasileia Griva earned her 14
th singles match win of the season after rallying from down a set to claim a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
Estefania Hernandez claimed her 15
th singles match win of the season after tallying a 6-2, 0-6, 6-2 three set win at No. 5 singles.
The #6 Lakers will now take on #2 Southwest Baptist who defeated #7 Findlay 4-2 Friday morning. This will be the first meeting between the two schools. The winner will advance to the Sweet 16 which will be played on Tuesday, May 17.
