GVSU Splits GLIAC Twinbill With Davenport Sunday

Won 6-3 and dropped 14-11 contest in game two

Grand Valley State split a GLIAC twinbill Sunday afternoon at the Laker Baseball field in cool and then rainy conditions with Davenport. The Lakers (28-15, 11-8 GLIAC) won the opener 6-3 and dropped game two to the Panthers (25-20, 13-6 GLIAC)14-11. The fourth and final game of the series will begin at 3:05 Monday (May 2) in Allendale.

Game 1
Davenport jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but catcher Brendan Guciardo hit a 2-run homer to right center after RF Justin Mansager reached on an error. 3B Jake Rydquist worked a 2-out walk and 2B Justin Ratliff followed with a double to center to plate Rydquist and give GVSU a 3-2 lead. Daveport tied the score with a run in the top of the third, but GVSU pushed three runs across in the bottom half of the frame. LF Kyle Nott opened the inning getting hit by a pitch and SS Christian Faust reached via an error by 3B. Mansager was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Guciardo was also hit to forced in a run. Faust scored on a wild pitche and DH Carter Smith drove in a run with a single for the final margin.

Guciardo drove in three runs and scored one, while Mansager, Nott, Faust and Rydquist each scored. Smith and Ratliff each collected a hit and and RBI. 

Austin Brown picked up the win on the mound (4-2), yielding three runs, two of which were earned, on six hits with five strikeouts. Nick Shaw picked up his 11th save of the year, giving up one hit and striking out four in two innings of work. 

Game 2
Davenport once again scored early with three runs in the top of the first in four hits, however the Lakers answered with three runs of their own on four hits. CF Spencer Nelson doubled and LF Kyle Nott followed with a single. Faust reached on a fielder's choice to plate Nelson and 1B Nate Logan hit a 2-run HR to right center to tie to the game at 3-3. GVSU added three more runs in the bottom of the third on four more hits. Nelson, Nott and SS Christian Faust singled, followed by a fourth consecutive single off the bat of Logan to score Nelson. RF Justin Mansager hit a sac fly to plate Nott and DH Carter Smith plated Faust with a squeeze. 

Davenport plated seven runs in the top of the fourth, six of which were unearned, after the first two batters of the inning were retired to take a 10-6 lead. The Lakers scratched across single runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Nelson HR to left and a single off the bat of 3B Connor Schuman to score Logan who singled to open the inning to pull within 10-8. The Panthers scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-8 lead. 

The Lakers pushed across one more run in the bottom of the seventh on a Mansager groundout to cut the lead to 12-9, but DU added runs in the eighth and ninth. Nelson plated Schuman with a double in the eighth and Logan plated Faust in the bottom of the ninth after he doubled to open the inning.

Logan was 4-for-4 with four RBI, while Nelson was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Faust was 2-for-5 with and RBI and four runs scored, Nott was 2-for-5 with a run scored and Mansager was 1-for-4 with two RBI. Schuman was 2-for-2 with an RBI. 

Nick Rutkowski, Colby Phipps, Logan Wynalda and Joseph Huesing tallied a combined 10 strikeouts and allowed six earned runs in the game.
