PREVIEW: Baseball hosts Davenport in four-game series this weekend

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Grand Valley State baseball team hosts Davenport this weekend for a four-game series beginning tomorrow (April 29) at the GVSU Baseball field at 3:05 PM. The weekend series schedule will be as follows:
 
Game one: Friday, 3:05 PM (9-innings)
Game two: Saturday, 1:05 PM (7-innings)
Game three: Saturday, 4:05 PM (9-innings)
Game four: Sunday, 12:35 PM (9-innings)

The two teams last met in the GLIAC Tournament Championship game last season where the Lakers fell to the Panthers 9-1. GVSU enters the series with a 27-13 record, 10-6 in the conference and are ranked third in the first NCAA Midwest Regional Rankings released Wednesday, April 27. They are coming off a four-game sweep over Saginaw Valley State last weekend. Junior Spencer Nelson batted 8-19 (.434 avg.) on the series with a double, triple, and two runs batted in. Sophomore Nathan Logan hit 7-19 (.368 avg.) in the series with a home run, four doubles, and six runs batted in, while sophomore Kyle Nott hit .353 on the weekend with a home run and two doubles. Senior pitcher Ben Thomas earned two wins in the series after tossing 5.2 innings allowing just one run off four hits, while striking out seven.
 
Nathan Logan ranks first in the GLIAC in home runs (9) and doubles (20) on the season and is fifth in the conference with a .384 batting average. Senior Christian Faust ranks first in the conference with 48 runs batted in, while Kyle Nott ranks third with 18 stolen bases. Spencer Nelson leads the team with 47 hits and is second on the team with 14 doubles and 40 runs scored from the leadoff spot. 
 
The Laker pitching staff has posted a 4.61 team era on the season. Senior Nick Shaw leads the team and ranks first in the GLIAC with 10 saves on the season. Shaw has allowed just one earned run in 19.0 innings pitched, while striking out 32 hitters. Sophomore Austin Brown has tossed three complete games on the season and has posted a 3-2 record in eight starts. Brown leads the team and ranks fourth in the GLIAC with 48 strikeouts. Redshirt freshman Collin Bradley leads the GLIAC with six wins, while senior Ben Thomas is second with five wins. 
 
Davenport enters the weekend first in the conference with an 11-5 record, 23-19 overall, and are ranked fourth in the NCAA Midwest Regional Rankings. The Panthers are hitting .307 as a team and have posted a 6.81 team era. Offensively, Davenport is led by Junior Ben Mets who ranks fourth in the conference with a .392 batting average and second with eight home runs. Senior Nolan Anspaugh leads the team with 15 doubles, 63 hits, and 56 runs scored. Junior Gaetano Vallone is second in the conference with 46 RBI's. Senior pitcher Derrick Edington is second in the conference with 55 strikeouts on the season. Junior Carter Troncin leads the pitching staff with a 4-1 record in 19 appearances.
