GLIAC – The No. 24 Grand Valley State softball team swept the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) weekly awards for the 10
th week of the 2022 softball season.
Hannah Beatus claimed her fifth honor of the season as conference Pitcher of the Week while
Joanna Cirrincione earned Player of the Week for the first time this season. The Lakers went 8-0 on the week and have now won 11 straight games to drop their magic number to one for a fifth straight GLIAC regular season championship.
Beatus (North Aurora, Ill.) went 4-0 on the week and allowed just one earned run in 26 innings of work while striking out 27 and walking 12. She threw a complete-game shutout on Wednesday (April 20) in a run-rule, 8-0 win in five innings. She allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five. She followed that up with a seven-inning shutout on Thursday at Ferris State, keeping the Bulldogs hitless through the first four innings in another two-hitter.
She avenged her only GLIAC loss of the season with a win over Wayne State Saturday, allowing one run on back-to-back two-out hits in the fourth for a 7-1 win before a complete-game win with one unearned run allowed against SVSU on Sunday, who entered play in second place in the GLIAC.
Cirrincione (Chicago, Ill.) hit .607 (17-28) for the week with five extra-base hits and at least one hit in all eight games to push her hitting streak to 15. She had multiple hits in six of the eight contests including three, three-hit games. Cirrincione scored 10 runs, touching the plate in seven of eight games and had four multi-RBI games.
She clubbed a mammoth, two-run home run in game one's win over Wayne State on Saturday for her second big fly of the season and made several key plays in the field, including an impressive full-sprint grab to prevent a big inning in game two of the doubleheader with the Warriors. She becomes the third GLIAC Player of the Week for GVSU this season, joining
Lydia Goble whom has twice won the honor in 2022.
The Lakers wrap up the regular season on the road this weekend as they travel to Purdue Northwest Friday and Parkside Saturday before the GLIAC Tournament the following weekend.
