Lakers Sweep Wayne State Friday

ALLENDALE – The Grand Valley State softball team won their sixth straight game after sweeping Wayne State 4-3 in game one and 8-0 in five innings in game two Friday (Apr. 3) afternoon. The Lakers improve to 17-13 on the season and 7-1 in the GLIAC.
 
Game One – W, 4-3
GVSU opened the scoring in the first inning off a two-run home run by Grace Usher to center field. Camryn Hall led the inning with a single and Usher launched her first home run of the season with two outs to put the Lakers up front 2-0. Usher would add to the lead in the third inning with an RBI single through the right side that allowed Faith Edwards to score all the way from first base. Later in the inning, Eliana Eiland singled to right field to score Usher from second base. The Warriors would score their three runs in the sixth inning off a three-run home run to right field. Karli Dorr would retire Wayne State in order in the seventh to secure the win.
 
Grace Usher batted 2-3 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored. Camryn Hall went 2-4 at the plate with a run scored. Eliana Eiland and Jenna Ballard each went 2-3 In the win. Karli Dorr got the start in the circle and earned the win to improve to 7-2 on the season after tossing all seven innings allowing three runs off seven hits with five strikeouts. 
 
Game Two – W, 8-0 (5-Innings)
The Lakers got off to a fast start in game two, bringing across three runs in the opening inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Usher notched her fourth RBI of the day to open the scoring with a single to left field to score Hall. Next batter, Kylee Hoebeke hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Edwards to score from third. Later in the inning, Liv Regnfuss doubled down the left field line to score Usher from second base. 
 
GVSU would tack on two run in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. Allyson Theunick doubled off the left field wall with one out and Carsyn Segorski walked to put runners on first and second. Next batter, Hall laid a bunt down and beat the throw for an infield single. The throw by the catcher went over the first baseman which allowed Theunick to score and everyone else to advance a base. Next at bat, Edwards grounded out to third which allowed Segorski to score from third.
 
The Lakers would score three runs in the fifth inning to secure the mercy rule win. Hoebeke advanced to second off a Warrior error which allowed Usher to score from third base. Later in the inning, GVSU loaded the bases for Segorski who launched a double off the left field line to score Hoebeke and Regenfuss to walk it off for the Lakers.
 
Camryn Hall batted 3-3 in game two with a run scored while Grace Usher went 2-3 at the plate with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI. Liv Regenfuss and Allyson Theunick notched a double and scored one run. Carsyn Segorski added a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Faith Edwards and Kylee Hoebeke each drove in one run and scored one run. Nevaeh Ingram got the start in the circle and earned the win after tossing all five innings allowing no runs off three hits with two strikeouts. 
 
GVSU will close the weekend at home against Saginaw Valley State. First pitch for game one is set for 3:30 PM due to rain in the forecast. The doubleheader will be streamed live on FloCollege.
