No. 10 Lakers Take Down the University of Colorado Colorado Springs

GVSU Women’s Lacrosse advances to 5-1 on the season

The No. 10 Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team capped off their four game road trip with an 8-7 win over the University of Colorado Colorado State. The Lakers are 5-1 on the year and after six games on the road, GVSU will finally open up at home this Friday, March 11. 

The Lakers trailed early against UCCS, as the Mountain Lions netted a goal in the first 40 seconds of the game. Senior Olivia Esposito and freshman Halle Nedohin each recorded a goal in the first period to give the Lakers a 2-1 advantage heading into the second. The Lakers held UCCS to just one goal in the second period, while junior attacker Kate DeYoung and senior attacker Sophie Conroy each scored to put GVSU up 4-2. Nedohin netted her second goal of the day with an assist from freshman Zoe Ziegler with just 12 seconds left in the first half. 

The Mountain Lions outscored the Lakers 2-1 in the third period, with GVSU's only goal of the period scored by sophomore Hailey Crittenden. DeYoung opened the fourth period with her second goal of the day, giving the Lakers a 7-4 lead with 12 minutes left. UCCS would go on a 3-0 run to make it a tied ball game with under three minutes to go. With 51 seconds left in the game, Conroy netted a goal to give the Lakers an 8-7 victory over the Mountain Lions. 

Conroy, DeYoung, and Nedohin each recorded two goals a piece, while Conroy also grabbed three ground balls and forced four turnovers. Esposito and Crittenden each scored a goal for the Lakers, while junior Molly Burinsger and freshman Zoe Ziegler led the team with four draw controls each. Sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Maloney finished the day with six ground balls and seven saves. 

The Lakers outshot the Mountain Lions 24-21 while GVSU also led in ground balls (20-12) and draw controls (11-8). The Lakers are back in action this Friday, March 11, as they open up at home against Findlay. First draw is set for 2:00 p.m.
