GVSU Women’s Basketball Takes Down the Ferris State Bulldogs

Lakers advance to 12-1 in the GLIAC and 19-1 on the season

The Laker women's basketball team defeated the Ferris State Bulldogs 75-68 on the road in Big Rapids, Mich. today and are now 19-1 on the season. After today's second win over the Bulldogs this season, the Lakers are now 12-1 in GLIAC play. 

GVSU was led by senior Emily Spitzley, who shot 50% on the day and finished with 18 points, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line. Sophomore Rylie Bisballe scored 15 points, while grabbing five rebounds and three steals. Senior Hannah Kulas came off of the bench and finished with 11 points and three boards, followed by sophomore Ellie Droste who finished with eight points and dished out a career-high seven assists. 

Rylie Bisballe started the Laker offense in the first quarter, scoring the first bucket for GVSU. While the Bulldogs tied it up twice, the Lakers never trailed in the first quarter and outscored FSU 20-14. Ferris went on a 10-3 run in the first three minutes of the second quarter and took the lead for the first time at 24-23. GVSU responded with a 5-0 run of their own. The Lakers finished the first half with a 38-33 advantage and Emily Spitzley finished the half with a team-high 10 points. 

The Lakers led the entire third quarter. While the Bulldogs were able to bring it within two points, GVSU outscored Ferris 17-12 in the third and went into the fourth with a 10 point lead over FSU (55-45). Despite being outscored 23-20 in the final quarter, GVSU defeated the Bulldogs 75-68. The Lakers shot 50% from the floor and 40% from the three in the second half compared to Ferris, who shot 35% from the floor and 29% from behind the arc. 

GVSU outshot the Bulldogs on the day as the Lakers shot 49% from the floor and the Bulldogs shot 36%. GVSU's bench also had a big day today, scoring 22 points for the Lakers, while Ferris only had eight points off of the bench. The Lakers are back in action at home next week against the Northern Michigan Wildcats. Tip off is set for 6:00 p.m.
