Lakers start off the 2022 season 2-0 in Florida

The No. 14 Lakers picked up their second win in Florida today after defeating the No. 11 University of Tampa Spartans 16-5. GVSU starts the season 2-0 against ranked opponents No. 23 Saint Leo and No. 11 Tampa.

GVSU struck first with sophomore Sydney Stone scoring the first goal of the game and swapping goals with the Spartans for the remainder of the first period. After an even 4-4 period, the Lakers were able to pull away in the second. Grand Valley started the second period scoring three goals in the first five minutes from sophomore Hailey Crittenden, Sydney Stone, and senior Olivia Esposito. While the Spartans responded with their only goal of the period at the 7:29 mark, the Lakers kept on rolling. Sophomore Maddy Champagne, senior Sophie Conroy, and junior Molly Bursinger each netted a goal in the remainder of the period and with just three seconds left on the clock, Bursinger netted home her second goal in a row on a free-position shot to end the half.

GVSU scored two goals and defensively shut out the Spartans in the third period, as sophomore goalkeeper Audrey Maloney tallied two saves. The Lakers led 14-5 heading into the final period. Sophie Conroy scored both of Grand Valley's goals in the fourth, giving the Lakers a 16-5 victory over Tampa.

Sophie Conroy led the Lakers with four goals, followed by Maddy Champagne who netted three goals. Molly Bursinger also scored two goals, while winning 10 draw controls for GVSU, and Audrey Maloney recorded a career high 14 saves. The Lakers outshot Tampa 35-22, including a 25-19 advantage of shots on goal.
