GVSU Baseball sweeps doubleheader against Findlay

Starts the 2022 season 2-0 after winning both games 6-5

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Grand Valley State baseball team starts the 2022 campaign 2-0 after sweeping Findlay in a doubleheader Sunday (Feb. 20) at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. GVSU will face Findlay tomorrow for a doubleheader with game one starting at noon.
 
Game One – W, 6-5
 
Findlay jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with a solo homerun. The Lakers scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead. Senior Christian Faust tied the game with an RBI to center field. Sophomore Kyle Nott gave the Lakers the lead with an RBI single. Findlay would take the lead right back in the bottom half of the fourth inning with a 2-run home run to make it a 3-2 game. In the top of the sixth, the Lakers would tie the game at 3-3 due to a Findlay error off of a sacrifice bunt. 
 
In the top of the seventh, sophomore Nathan Logan launched a 2-run home run over the left center wall, giving GVSU a 5-3 advantage. In the top of the eighth inning, freshman Carter Rohman hit an RBI single, his first as a Laker, to increase the lead to 6-3. Findlay brought across two runs in the ninth to make it a 6-5 game, but junior Sam Leck recorded the final two outs to secure the win.
 
Senior Mark Scannell got the start and threw 5.0 innings while allowing three runs on three hits and seven strikeouts. Senior Ben Thomas earned the win (1-0), tossing 3.1 innings while allowing two runs (zero earned) on three hits and five strikeouts. Sam Leck picked up the save for the Lakers.
 
Nate Logan led the Lakers with two RBI's. Faust, Nott, and Rohman each had one RBI. Faust and Nelson each scored two runs. 
 
Game Two – W, 6-5
 
With the very first pitch of the game, Spencer Nelson launched a solo home run over the left field scoreboard to give the Lakers the early 1-0 lead. Findlay would quickly respond with a bases clearly double in the bottom of the first to give them a 3-1 lead. 
 
The Lakers would cut the deficit in half in the third inning with a two out triple by Kyle Nott who would score next batter off a wild pitch. GVSU would tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning off a ball four wild pitch that would advance Cade Stanton to third. Nate Logan attempted to advance to second that got Findlay to throw over, allowing Stanton to score from third.
 
Findlay would retake the lead in the fifth inning with a pair of RBI singles, giving them a 5-3 lead. The Lakers would answer with a three-run sixth inning. With two outs, Carter Rohman reached on an error that would score Logan to make it a 5-4 game. After a hit-by-pitch, Justin Mansager singled to left field to tie the score at 5-5. Next batter, Spencer Nelson reached on an error, scoring Collins to give the Lakers the lead.
 
The Lakers would hold on to win by a score of 6-5. The pitching staff was dominant, recording 21 total strikeouts. Sophomore Austin Brown got the start and went 4.2 innings while allowing two earned runs off three hits and striking out 11 batters. Freshman Collin Bradley cam in relief and earned the win (1-0), tossing 3.1 innings while not giving up any runs on three hits and striking out seven batters.  Senior Nick Shaw picked up the save, striking out the side in the ninth.
 
Spencer Nelson and Justin Mansager each had a hit and RBI. Kyle Nott, Nathan Logan each recorded a hit and run scored. Sophomore Zach Collins scored the winning run for the Lakers.
