CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - The Grand Valley State baseball team split with Findlay in a doubleheader Monday (Feb. 21) at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe, Ohio. The Lakers won three out of four games in the weekend series and is 3-1 to start the 2022 season.

Game One – L, 11-2
Â
Findlay jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a solo home run and RBI double in the second inning. GVSU would cut the deficit in half in the third with a
Spencer Nelson double down the left field line to score
Justin Mansager. Findlay quickly responded by scoring four runs in the fourth inning to make it a 6-1 game. The Oilers added five more runs in the fifth inning to make it an 11-1 game. The Lakers would only add one more run in the sixth inning with a solo home run from
Christian Faust.

Nick Rutkowski (0-1) was tagged with the loss, while
Joseph Huesing,
Allan Thorington, and
Logan Wynalda recorded the final six outs.Â

Game Two – W, 22-3
Â
GVSU took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning from a Findlay two out error that scored Nelson and Nott. The Lakers would add on to the lead in the second inning, scoring seven runs. Faust hit a two RBI single, scoring Zach Collins and
Jake Rydquist.
Nathan Logan launched a two-run home run, his second of the weekend.
Brendan Guciardo recorded his first RBI's as a Laker with a two-RBI single up the middle to make it a 9-0 game. Findlay would get on the board in the bottom of the second.

The Lakers would answer with a ten run third inning.
Cade Stanton started the scoring with a bases loaded walk.
Jake Rydquist recorded an RBI single to center field, followed by a
Spencer Nelson double that scored two runs making it a 16-1 game.
Kyle Nott tripled to right center, scoring Nelson, followed by a
Cade Stanton two-RBI single for his third RBI of the inning that made it a 19-1 game.

In the seventh inning,
Christian Faust hit his second home run of the day. The next batter,
Justin Mansager launched his first home run as a Laker to give GVSU a 22-3 lead.

Colby Phipps (1-0) picked up his first career win as a Laker, tossing 5.0 innings, while allowing three earned runs on five hits and six strikeouts.

Spencer Nelson went 3-6 on the game with two RBI's and four runs scored.
Christian Faust went 3-4 with a home run, four RBI's and four runs scored.
Kyle Nott was 2-4 with, and RBI triple and four runs scored, while
Nathan Logan picked up a hit and three RBI's.Â
