No. 5 GVSU Women’s Basketball Defeat Michigan Tech on Sawyers Day

Grand Valley State advances to 21-1 on the season

GVSU - MTU Basketball Highlights

The No. 5 Grand Valley State women's basketball team defeated the Michigan Tech Huskies 61-45 in their second victory over MTU this season. GVSU won their 16th straight game and advanced to 14-1 in the GLIAC and 21-1 on the season.

It was a competitive matchup in Allendale, as GVSU was looking for their second win over the Huskies after defeating them in overtime earlier this season. GVSU and MTU were back and forth in the first quarter with neither team being able to pull away by more than three points. Despite the Huskies shooting 56% in the first compared to Grand Valley's 40%, GVSU led 14-13 heading into the second quarter.

Michigan Tech started the second with a 6-2 run and Grand Valley was unable to take back the lead for the remainder of the half. The Huskies outscored GVSU 16-12 in the second quarter and led 29-26 going into the second half. Grand Valley started the third quarter with a 6-0 run and never looked back.

The Lakers outscored the Huskies 19-9 in the third and held MTU to just 25% from the floor. In the fourth, GVSU shot 55% and held the Huskies to just seven points in the quarter. Grand Valley outscored Michigan Tech 16-7 and defeated the Huskies 61-45.

Sophomore Ellie Droste and Rylie Bisballe led the Lakers in today's matchup. Droste finished with 19 points, shooting 7-11 on the day. Bisballe finished with a back-to-back double-double this week, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Bisballe also led the team in assists and steals, with three a piece. Senior Qay Stanton and sophomore Hadley Miller were not only big defensive factors for GVSU today, but the pair of guards chipped in six points each on the offensive end.

Grand Valley dominated the paint as they outrebounded Michigan Tech by 10 (39-29) and scored 38 points in the paint. GVSU also finished with 13 offensive boards and blocked six shots.

GVSU is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 17 at Davenport with tip off set for 6:00 p.m.
